Hmm. The million-dollar question . . . did they actually hit what they were aiming at? Not sure this is an entirely good development. Strange bedfellows and all that, I know. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, at least temporarily. But it seems that rather than helping contain the crisis, this is giving precedent and practice for them mucking around elsewhere. Places like Bahrain certainly can't be thrilled.

"We are flying missions over Iraq, we co-ordinate with the Iraqi government as we conduct those," he said. "It's up to the Iraqi government to de-conflict that airspace."

By most accounts the Iranian pilots knew their business during the Iran-Iraq War. Of course, that was 30 years ago and I seriously doubt any of them are still in the cockpit, but you can bet they trained the guys who are.

I'd be more concerned about a bunch of other armed aircraft flying around in the same airspace without much in the way of coordination, just from a "planes running into each other' standpoint. I'd hope there's at least some kind of "you stay east of here, we'll stay west" deconfliction line, even if it's unavowed and informal. This shit's hard enough when you've got all the C2 in the world to help you out.

Ehhhh, some may have been good but they still didn't dominate the Iraqis in the air war so I am not so sure the stories quite match up with reality, much like their kills they claimed with their F-14's. Apparently some of the best folks in the region when it comes to flying nowadays is the UAEAF.

Dropping a few bombs doesn't automatically make someone useful or effective, fortunately Iraq is a fair sized country so the Iranians can have their fun without having to bother the folks doing the real work too much.
