I just noticed, check out the "Vultures" along the "Row", & around and above the bridge. It appears that some are waving at the landing Spad driver!VA-52 AD-6 Skyraider trapping on Victorious - 1961

Bingo... That's why they sentenced Ol' Bee to a be a career Scooter jock, without parole. Just one less item to blow on the takeoff checklist! That Li'l A-4 could probably have broken the surly bonds w/ wings folded, like it's Daddy the Spad did. Ed Heinemann was an aircraft design genius!A-4 was the only one without folding wings.
That's going to be a 1 wire…which wasn't maybe so much frowned upon back then.HMS Victorious (R-38) underway - 1961

How you can determine that's a #1 wire on a brit carrier from that photo/angle, is beyond me, although my vision has rapidly deteriorated over the past 6 mos. to the point that I could no longer drive safely. That's going to be a 1 wire…which wasn't maybe so much frowned upon back then.
Well, there aren't any wires farther aft, and that aircraft is about one nano-second from touchdown...How you can determine that's a #1 wire on a brit carrier from that photo/angle, is beyond me, although my vision has rapidly deteriorated over the past 6 mos. to the point that I could no longer drive safely.

Evidently, there has been at least 8 incidents of F-8s successfully taking off/landing with wings folded. This pic says it all, VMF-235: 0,5 flight including fuel dump & ordnance jettison, prior to field arrestment at Danang. Pilot, a young JO Lt, was sent immediately as ground FAC. Viet war, year not found.Didn't a Sader do a lap around the pattern with the wings folded too?
