Again, what I mentioned was strictly Supply. I would talk to a pilot about there shore duties and educational options.
NPS shore tour, or Naval War College resident program if you're senior... NPS offers an EMBA that is one day a week via VTC and NWC offers a fleet seminar program at major concentration points to get JPME-1 and a Masters in National Security Studies. Also the Navy offers a graduate education voucher (like $20k/ yr x2) for you to attend a school on your shore tour and you earn a subspecialty code. There are also some fellowship program and Olmsted Scholar opportunities. I'm probably missing some but a lot of people I know are working on their followon education during their shore tour, even if they're just getting a masters by paying out of their own pocket.
The only problem with that is that my performance for that tour would be "not observed," which can hurt me when it's time to screen for O-4. Unless you mean doing a distance learning program with NPS/NWC while doing something else like FRS/VT instructor for the shore tour? Would that be an option?NPS shore tour, or Naval War College resident program if you're senior...
Yeah I meant NPS more than NWC. Specifically I'm thinking about when would be the best time to turn my current business minor into an MBA. That's what I meant when I said going to NPS for the first shore tour isn't ideal, since pilots should be doing something observable during that time in preparation for the promotion boards, which usually happen sometime after that first shore tour. Since the master's degree is required to be promoted beyond a certain point, should I be trying to get the MBA during flight training with some sort of distance learning program or night classes? When he says those tours are for senior guys, he doesn't mean first shore tour. If your profile is accurate you are thinking wayyyy farther down the road than you need to be.

Well actually no, I didn't realize that. Then which part is the master's degree required for? O-5?You do realize a masters isn't a requirement for O-4, and you will have plenty of time once you are actually a LCDR?

Geez Pat, all this talk about setting up for O-4 screening, requirements for O-5 promotion, advanced schools/degrees etc. Correct me if I'm wrong... are you finished undergrad yet... are you commissioned yet, you have OCS & flight training to go... are you not getting too far ahead of yourself?Well actually no, I didn't realize that. Fair enough. I did finish my degree recently, and now I'm waiting for my OCS date, so I guess I just have a lot of free time to think about the future and everything. But you're right, I might be putting the cart before the horse a little bitBzB

On another thread, your all hopped up about getting a (money pit) expensive boat in flight training, and you have OCS to 'conquer' still. Point being, you have the foothills to concentrate on (OCS/flt-trng/wings}, before preparing for the mountains (promotions/duty stations/special schools/advanced degrees, etc.). As they say, one step at a time. Your writing seems to indicate that all the things you have to overcome & accomplish on the looong road to O-4/5 and beyond, are in the bag... they're not, and it's not easy at any step along the way, JMHO.

Yes.
You can be promoted to O-5 without a masters, but the odds are abysmal.
I call bullshit.....
