Coyote down in my orchard

I was just about to leave for work this morning and decided to let the dogs out to pee/poo. Turned on the porch light, grabbed the flashlight (I wanted to clear the area of coyotes; my female has already killed two this year and I figured they might be back for revenge on my pup...he's only 4 months).

Swept the area and saw one...yelled and he only looked at me, blinking those little green targets from about 60 yards away. I yelled for the wife to toss me her .45. I put the light up again and there he was. Hold, squeeze...coyote down. I went over to him and he got up, so I shot him twice more, another one in the chest and one which darn near took his nose off...he was moving.

He was still alive...crap. Finished him off with a shovel. Two solid chest hits with 230 grain JHPs (Speer Gold Dots) and he is still around and moving.

Haven't seen anything like that in years.

Dogs (and their cousins) don't go down easily. The shovel was a nice touch though. :D

I'm not surprised. Those fuckers strap themselves to rockets regularly, and somehow manage to live...

Brings to mind the one I took down with a 25-06 several years ago. He crossed my shooting lane and then made the mistake of crossing back to sniff and pee on a bush. I cut the tail off and took it home. Our Yorkie went totally batshit when I let him sniff it. I was rolling on the garage floor. :D

Three slugs and a shovel, dang... zombie coyote... hopefully there aren't any more like him.

Damn.

How often do you shoot? That's a pretty good shot right there.

Well, there is a reason for that...the weapon only had 4 rounds in the mag. Yup, wifey was spoken to about not having a full mag; it carries 10. Taurus Millenium Pro.

Haven't shot any hi capacity .45 types. It the Taurus more suited for guys with larger hands? I do need to get a .45, but haven't considered this model.

At the local, friendly pistol match I go to every month, they will often have one stage that has a 35-45 yard shot. It's not the whole stage, just one part, and often it can be shot prone. Lots of guys who just go shoot at 7 yards at the range complain about it, but I think it can be fun. That doesn't mean all my rounds hit, but it's still fun. A couple of the old-timers will plug the bullseye with DA revolvers.

It's a constant battle for me to get a grip that fits. For ARs, I find the Magpul MIAD with the fat insert works. For my .45 (single-stack 1911), I really like my Hogue grip. If you're looking for something smaller and concealable, it might not be the answer, but I find it does help with putting my finger at the right place on the trigger and still able to shoot straight (something I struggle with on a Glock).

I wore size 11 flight gloves; this gun fits my hand well, with a tiny bit of little finger over the edge. Gen I and II versions of this model had issues. I've not had a single problem with either of these two, however, my demo gun is serviced once a year by a smith.
