2012 Holiday Leave

Has anyone who is attending OCS over the holidays heard what the dates off are going to be for leave this year? I know we get two weeks off, I just don't know what two weeks. I know some people will say not to worry about, you will find out when you get there, etc., but people who are not driving to OCS will need to book flights in advance if they plan on going home for Christmas. I for one am flying to OCS and I definitely plan on flying home to see my wife and daughter for Christmas.

There are people who show up to OCS and not even make it past week 1 so don't worry about crossin that bridge until you get there and they brief the regiment. Get used to doing stuff last minute in the Navy you won't always get the word when you want. I didnt get my orders to API until 2 days before graduation and I had personal property moves and stuff to set up.

His question is reasonable, and if his sn is true then OP is not new to the Navy.

The official holiday standdown dates weren't posted until early November last year, so I doubt you're going to find them right now in Sept. I did a google search and there is no information on the official dates. The OCS standdown dates tend to coincide with the official Navy dates.

It is actually very rare for a person to go home from OCS, the data for FY12 (minus a class or two) showed that 36 total people DOR'd, if there is a medical issue you don't go home right away there are evaluations done to see if they can or cannot keep you, so you do want to make plans if you are in one of the classes that will cover the holidays.

OP - I was at OCS for the holiday period last year. The staff takes everyone getting home for the holidays very seriously and you will get sufficient advanced notice (at least three weeks) to book flights home, as well as internet access to book a ticket if you need it.

The OP was worried about cost and flight availability; three weeks is not a lot of time to avoid the holiday prime pricing period.

OP: The OCS website has contact information. You can attempt to contact them to see if they have determined the holiday stand-down period yet. Considering that this period will have to be planned for any class arriving October or later, you might have some early success planning for it.

Also people in "H" get to go on stand-down, too.

I've been in the Navy over 10 years. Trust me, I am not new to finding things out last minute and have had to improvise many times in my career. However, I also know that most commands start to put out their holiday leave dates around this time so that service members can plan accordingly. I would assume OCS is no different; DIs and class teams take leave like everybody else.

That's good to know. I figured as much, the question just popped in my head and I thought I would ask on AW to see if anyone else had already heard about this. I will probably call or email next week to ask just to see if they have put them out yet. If not, then i will just wait until later. It's not a big deal; just trying to plan ahead if possible.

I sent an email off the the OCS point of contact two weeks ago and haven't heard back yet. I can't find a phone number anywhere either to call and ask about it. Looks like we will just have to wait until we get there; which kind of sucks for those of us who are trying to arrange holiday plans with family members. I have family flying in from the UK and don't really want them to have to wait unitl last minute to buy their tickets, but what can you do. Unfortunately, that is how life in the military works sometimes.

I wasn't an OCS guy, but the last thing I would do is call anyone up in Newport looking for leave dates. Keep your head down.

But if you must, don't mention your name ;)

Are you allowed to only take a couple days worth of leave or if you leave Newport on leave for Xmas you have to take the full holiday stand down off?

The holiday leave policy has been posted on the OCS homepage. It states: "Student leave periods will be divided into two periods. The first leave period will begin EOT on Friday, 21 December and end at 0730 on Friday, 28 December. The second leave period will begin at 0800 on Friday, 28 December and end at 1600, 4 January 2013."

My question for anyone who has attended OCS over the holidays in the past is, will we be restricted to taking only one of the two leave periods, or is there any chance of them allowing us to take leave over both leave periods? I am just trying to figure out if I am going to be able to get two weeks off or only one. I have family flying in for Christmas from overseas, so two weeks would be better, but one is better than none.
