So SSN 780 is going to be the Missouri. I don't know how I feel about Naming another ship after BB-63, Mighty Mo. Anyone else have any thoughts?

I think (speaking from an entirely outside circle) the Navy needs to sit down and figure out a plan as far as naming ships goes and stick with it.

Battleships were named after States.... ok we got rid of those what can we make some Governor/Senetor happy with.... umm... how about Trident Subs.... Yeah that'll work there wont be a bunch of them so we dont have overlaps of names of ships still in service.... Well hey guys I know we've been naming attack subs after cities for a long time with the LA class boats, but how about we name the last Seawolf after Jimmy Carter.... oh and with these new attack boats lets change to States for these too.... and then lets start naming a couple of the LPDs after states.... Crap we're out of states... well how does USS Puerto Rico and USS Virgin Islands strike you?

Seriously what the hell.

I mean, personally, I feel that the Missouri should have joined the USS Constitution and remained on active duty, even if she just became a pier-queen.

Interesting...
Since there is almost no possibility of ever having another "battleship" class of ships, I think it is fair to have one of the deadliest sea-going vessels bear the name of Missouri.

But what about the historical significance of BB-63? No other ship will ever live up to that reputation, mainly because we will never fight a war like WWII. Make another Iowa for all I care, or new jersey, I but for the love of JPJ, not the Missouri!

You do NOT know that.

It's Calculon! Hit the deck!
I definitely would've named it after Iowa, New Jersey or Wisconsin or something first...

It feels a little random to name another sub after a ship that played a pretty significant part in history.

The Navy's been pretty good about this in the past, with the capital ships (battleships and carriers) named after states, historical ships or big figures, but the last few decades there's been some real head scratchers with naming consistency

When you have a JDAM coming through your cave entrance, I don't think anyone much cares about the name of the vessel which launched the attack.

True, but if they somehow get the Order of Battle before that JDAM enters the cave, maybe they will have already off'ed themselves when they saw the Yorktown, Enterprise, and Hornet are full steam ahead to the Gulf. :D

Nice!

I had to look up the names: Alfred, Columbus, Cabot, Andrew Doria, and Providence don't sound very tough to me either but that wouldn't be the first thing on my mind if one of them sent a cannonball my way. Just sayin' (shrug...)

When its a thousand feet long 10 stories high, and displaces 103 thousand tons, does it really matter what its called?
