Situation #1

ENS involved in this situation was a squared away API stud.... Was in tip top physical shape, kept his uniform in great order, volunteered for the stash jobs nobody wanted, and studied in much of his spare time waiting to class up... ENS had 2 beers out with his buddies, and in leaving, accidentally bumps a parked car.... Very little damage, but ENS parks, goes in to find the owner of the car (honest, rare thing these days) in order to make arrangements for compensating for the damage... Owner comes out and calls the police to have an official report on file.... Police issue citation to said ENS, who when asked, admitted to the police that he had a couple beers with dinner... Police fill out the standard citation, but because ENS was drinking, has to put 'With alcohol as a possible factor' on the ticket. ENS was well below the legal limit (and resultantly wasn't issued a DUI or anything close).
This ENS was kicked out of the flight program; despite his efforts and the efforts of his superiors (who in dealing with him, knew he was a stand up guy). Believe it.

I'm just curious why this guy was removed from flight and who ordered it. I mean, it should have been clear that he didn't commit a DUI. Was the only reason that he was busted because of the "alcohol as a possible factor" part?

This story sucks because it goes against that whole "be honest" thing. Guy was honest and didn't do anything wrong and still got screwed.

I'm not saying this to scare people, but it really should be a wake up call.

This could happen to anyone in any situation...

Not trying to scare anyone?! Damn...I'm gonna have nightmares about this post for weeks.

Seriously, though, thanks for the heads up, terrifying as it may be.

It doesn't matter who ordered it... He was issued a traffic citation that MAY have had alcohol as a factor... That is enough of a reason for the NAVY to not want to deal with it and bring in a fresh ENS to replace him. Such decisions are made WAY above my paygrade, so I won't even speculate beyond that, but trust it.

There are hundreds, if not thousands working their tails off in college for one of these slots... NASC as well as the primary training commands, don't need to waste any time or energy on you if you slip up, or are even dealt a bit of bad luck... Sad but true.

On another note - similar to Picaroon's - this bothers me. We're talking about two people (in your anecdotes, I mean) who made good, honest, responsible decisions and were kicked out as a direct result. I guess the whole "Naval Aviation takes care of its own" doesn't apply until wings.

I know, I know...WAY out of my paygrade...but still, it doesn't seem right to me, and not just in the "life's not fair" kind of way.

It seems like these punishment things last for a couple weeks and then are relaxed...but I get the feeling that this one might last a while. I wasn't at muster this morning (IFS) but I heard that the skipper came to talk to everyone.

The punishment doesn't seem to fit the offense, IMHO. If people are having trouble following the liberty policy and then lying to cover their tracks, I'd simply restrict liberty. Instead of a 300 miles radius, make it 50, or none at all, until the pool can demonstrate we can handle leaving town.

Inspections, while good for discipline I guess, are probably just going to end up annoying the LTs more than everyone else because it's going to take so long (not to mention the embarrassment of having 400 Ensigns on the parade field for everyone to see, and I'm sure everyone on base will know why they're gonna be there)

Either way, a fine display from the 2% of Ensigns that cause 98% of the trouble.

Wow, after reading those comments on there, those people are extremely pissed off. Not much must go on in Naples.
No kidding. Was it a sick, stupid thing to do? Absolutely. But judging by some of the comments, you'd think they'd shot someone's kids.

Note to all gun owners and A-pool Ensigns: "Buddy" is indeed half a word.

Dude. Above your pay grade or not, you are still entitled to your opinion. In fact, I would argue that thinking about these things (by that I mean giving them honest hard intellectual and moral consideration) make you a better person and officer. Pay grade shouldn't matter as long as you keep your pihlosophcal inquiries confined to yourself or a closed-door discussion with your ENS buddies.

Just my opinion though...

I would understand this if they had already seen the '70s survival video. After all, everyone knows that killing the bird will improve morale, and every bird is edible . . .

Ah yes, the training film where I learned to watch what the monkey eats, and then eat the monkey!

Sheer stupidity. I find it incomprehensible that anyone could truly be that dumb. It's amazing how quickly some people manage to go from living the dream to facing federal charges...

Even with the limited amount of information that's being released, I for one am glad they won't be wearing the same uniform and gold wings on their chests.

This guy especially angers me: http://ms2.naplesnews.com/npdn/content/img/photos/2009/02/19/MatoZachary_t600.jpg

He has no goddamn clue...
