Moving Etiquette

Yup, had a problem with a crew. I referenced the dude and the company had no knowledge. Personal Property's guess (and I concur) was he was a friend of a packer helping out. The company honored the damage to my house but it was way harder then it should have been. So now a group picture. Individual pictures of packers are good too. You know "to e-mail to my family who has never moved and doesn't have a clue what we go through." <--- Which is what I was actually doing the first time I took pics. Now I just take a group pic and I think they get exactly why I do it.

Ah that is quite smart.

I moved furniture throughout college to supplement my drinking habits and I would have to say a tip is never expected - but I would say every day at least one to three conversations took place on whether the mover was a douche or cool and if we would get a tip or not. I would say a tip is cool - but lunch/drinks are just as good. And we never EXPECTED it. BUT - I will tell you I saw people who gave the movers shit all day and followed them around get their shit thrown around on the truck. So, be courteous and we always tried hard to take care of their stuff. But then again - most of the labor that works for moving companies weren't the most savory characters.

Yea i'm thinking of a full dity. I think I can fit everything I own in a trailer (i'm not married yet, so the stuff hasn't multiplied exponentially yet), and hopefully come up with some sweet coin on the way.

Agree, highly recommended for the DINK crowd or those with uncomplicated moves. You will pocket lots of cash and get a lot less mad when you drop your own stuff.

It's kind of like self cleaning military housing. It's a great concept, but only works if you have the time and energy.

I have never tipped but always bought meals and drinks. I have had horrible moves and great ones. I think it just depends on the individuals.

Common thread in most of these posts, everyone buys pizza. I've done a lot of moves and each time I've asked what they wanted. I learned that my first move when I bought a couple and the guys ate it but afterwords told me that the absolutely hated pizza since they had had it so much. I've done subs, burgers, KFC, each seemed to be a hit.

Tipping never crossed my mind at all. I figure I feed them well enough that they can keep their own money that they would've spent on food.

Taco Bell works too. Almost as cheap as pizza too

Why are some of you guys so stingy with tips? There are times that a tip (buyoff) makes very good sense. This isn't TGIF and the worst that will happen is not getting cold jalapeno poppers and having to ask to get your drink refilled. These people are moving your shit and it is a major headache to get a claim filled. Not to mention, they are generally working all day. If nothing else, make sure you treat the driver well.

I'll bet many of you who are debating whether to give a tip are the same ones who on det will throw down a $20 for your $10 sandwich and not pick up change.

If they go above and beyond and are courteous, I always gave them a tip. If they were a-holes and threw my stuff around, they got nothing.

I did always offer them something to drink early and if they showed up around a meal time, bought a pizza. It was a preemptive move that normally made them easier on my belongings.

I have always done the same. This past move, was no exception..however, they still managed to mis-pack my Dillon press (I gave them the original box; it was empty) and my wifes expensive figurines (all the original boxes were empty and all the figurines were damaged to the tune of about $2700 in losses). Twenty two boxes were missing.

Last time (after I HAD tipped everyone $20 each) I had $1200 worth of my shit broken at the other end.

I made 1 phonecall, filled out 1 online form, and had a check less than a week later. YMMV.

No tips or lunch today. Snacks and drinks, tho. So far, they just broke about every single lightbulb in my house ("No, sir, we can't pack the bulbs they might get broken in shipment.") and one of them left a nasty grumpy in my toilet. Then he had to go and unpack my plunger to deal with it.

For me, up until I read this thread, it never even crossed my mind to tip these guys. I just always made sure they were fed well and had enough gatorade/water/cokes available.

So far (knock on wood) the worst thing that has happened was a digital camera "got lost" during an unpack, and that ended up getting replaced by my renter's insurance.

I've always wondered about the tipping thing, but have decided to stick to buying lunch instead.

I always feel like an asshole watching other people move my shit (yes, I know, its their job) so I like to jump in and help out. I try not to violate their space, and I think its kind of like a tip since I decrease each worker's load by X %. When we got unloaded here in Oak Harbor the driver showed up with 2 helpers, and it seemed like none of them got along with eachother. I ended up setting the pace moving boxes into the house, and probably got them out of there a couple hours earlier than they would have.

I'm looking forward to my move out of Japan because i've heard nothing but great things about Japanese movers. The unload team I had here was amazing and fast. A buddy of mine recently packed out and his entire house (married, kid, huge amount of crap) was packed in 6.5 hrs.

Of course, I'm looking forward to that move for other reasons too...

Tip your guys. I've only got one Navy PCS move under my belt so far (second coming in less than 2 months), but tipping worked out. The moving crew was slow loading the truck on the day I had to leave, but they didnt drop or break anything. I bought them lunch and gave them each $20. I had the same crew bring the stuff to me in San Diego, and they unloaded it like lightning. They did a nice job, tipped them again.
