1001 questions (and answers) concerning BDCP

Good afternoon, all. I had a question for anyone who may be able to help me out. I'm wanting to get into the BDCP, hopefully as SNFO, but I have horrible vision. My recruiter told me I could get PRK surgery, but then I'd have to wait a year before entering the program. I was confused about this, so I messaged a tech at NAMI. He told me that the wait period was 3 months for a waiver, and that he thought it would apply for BDCP as well. So now I'm completely confused and have no idea what to think. Any helpful advice?

A while back I saw 6 months was the wait time. I'm not sure though because it does not apply directly to me. I would imagine you can apply for BDCP when you are in the timeframe to receive a waiver but not before you get the surgery. I recommend talking to your recruiter and asking feddoc who is a member of this website. Feddoc is very help with questions applying to the medical side of things. Don't put too much weight on my info though because I know very little. Do you even need PRK to qualify for NFO? I thought the vision standards for NFO only required a corrected vision of 20/20 and you can use contacts. It might be wise to look into it and gather all the information before making a decision.

I have a quick question about the academic degree completion form. Once I transfer to Auburn University this upcoming fall I will have three years remaining before I graduate (Spring 2013). The original plan was to graduate after the fall semester of 2012. However, the aerospace engineering classes are only offered once a year and I am missing one of the prerequisites for most aerospace classes (Statics). So I am planning to take all the general engineering classes I have remaining (statics, thermo, dynamics, mechanics of materials, intro to electrical engineering) my first year. Since I am transferring in close to 65 hours, I will not have enough classes to make a full time schedule for the first two semesters and the last semester before graduation. I know it’s required to be a full time student. On the degree completion form can I just indicate I will take extra classes to fill my schedule? The only problem is I don’t know which classes I want to take yet.
An example of what I mean:
Fall 2010
ENGR 2050 Statics – 3 hours
ENGR 2010 Thermodynamics – 3 hours
PHIL 1020 Business Ethics – 3 hours
**** Non-major Elective – 2 or 3 hours
**** Non-major Elective – 2 or 3 hours
Would something like that be ok? An off topic question, is it extremely rare for people to get accepted in BDCP with 3 years remaining? Thanks in advance.

You will have to fill those to full time, but if you put "unspecified general elective" in the required spot on your DCP it should work. You might want to check with Auburn because I didn't think they would let you transfer over 60 hrs. Might just have been my brother's major.

You are right about the 60 hour thing. You can't transfer in 60 or more hours in your major. I should have clarified that. I believe I have 57 or 58 hours that count towards my major. The other 7 or 8 hours are pretty much useless. On a side note, having three years to graduate makes my schedule pretty easy. My advisor pointed out that my second year's schedule will consist of 13 hours the first semester and 14 the second (which would be the junior year classes). Most juniors have 16 or 17 hours the first semester and 17 the second. My senior year will be 13 hours for the first and 12 for the second. So that is one major advantage by having an easier schedule. Because from what I hear aerospace engineering can suck sometimes.

Because from what I hear aerospace engineering can suck sometimes.

Gonna go ahead and confirm that for you right now. Aerospace engineering is a bucket of suck sometimes but if you find a good study group, things become a lot easier. best of luck with your degree.

Hello All,

I have my first in-person meeting with my recruiter next week, but I am also already working with my academic advisor on my DCP and I had a question. Does your OCS date change if you graduate ahead of time? I will save about 6k if I overload for two terms, but I do not want to put this on my BDCP in case I am unable to enroll in the classes I need in the correct order. I know after you graduate you go to work at your local office until you head to OCS, so would this just be extended? Just wanting to get an idea on possible time lines.
Thanks,
Lucy

I’m about finished with my application and it will be submitted sometime in May. I’m just waiting for the end of the semester so I can submit my final grades. I talked to my recruiter today and he said I was being put in for something called BDCP field select. Has anyone ever heard of this? I am completely in the dark about what it means. I looked around on the internet but I didn’t find any useful information on anything called BDCP field select. I was just wondering what it was. Thanks for the help.

EDIT: After looking around I found a thread about it on this site. I am still confused but this link cleared somethings up for me. Does anyone know if this is a common type of selection (field select) for BDCP?

Hi everyone,

I just started on my BDCP package and I was wondering how much does community service and being in organizations and clubs impact your application? Does any community service work and how many hours would be a plus? Being a accounting major does this make my major a technical or non technical? and does this reduce my chances of being admitted to BDCP?

Thanks in advance for all the help.

1) Community Service big +++, there is a place to write this down and the hours
2) any hours is good, pretty sure I helped set up a race for the cure event for about 4 hrs one day and then ran the race the next day and listed this in my app.
List any clubs, community service, athletics, anything that you think makes you a good officer candidate.
3) Accounting not technical, as far as I know. However, Accounting should not hurt your chances of getting accepted. I was accepted with Finance, I would imagine that the board knows that you wont forget math and have lots of leadership based classes in business majors.

Advice: pick a major that you like, have an awesome GPA, do well on the ASTB and you should be fine

It was legit last I knew. I thought you were a CC transfer, though? I haven't heard of anyone actually getting field selected, and I wouldn't expect a transfer student to be the first. Maybe your NRD does things differently, though.

Thanks for all the information, where do I record the community service hours? Is it a separate sheet or within the BDCP packet?

I am a CC transfer and I thought being a CC transfer student would be a major negative on my package. However, my recruiter believes I have a strong package and I have a chance to get field selected. He said someone got selected this way not long ago with a lower GPA and lower test scores. I don't really know what to expect but all I can do is apply and find out. I have nothing to lose.
