Hey all,

Took the ASTB friday for the first time and scored a 6/6/5 - 53 on form 4. I'm wondering how competitive of a score that is for flight school with the Coast Guard. I'm already set to go to OCS and thought I would take it before I get there.
Second the ask a CG officer recruiter comment. Also, there is a specific USCG forum on AW where they would be able to help you better than people here. http://www.airwarriors.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=30

NTX, we go at each other's team on the College Football thread a lot. He's obviously in denial. :D

I took the test yesterday and got 6-6-7-55. I'm going for Navy SNA. I've checked the NAMI site and saw that something like 26.9% of test takers had scores that good or better (for AQR and PFAR). I'm really wanting to know where I stand. I would think that scoring in the top 1/4 would be good enough, but my recruiter told me to stay even-keeled. Really, I just want to fly and might go to whoever takes me first (Marines or Navy). All help is appreciated, boys.

Also, 3.1 GPA from University of Kentucky (Finance). Very involved in high school athletics and Fraternity.

rbwill,
Many people before you have been in the same situation. For OCS, it boils down to the needs of the Navy (and Marine Corps). While the ASTB is used as part of your selection, it's not the only thing they look at. Grades, Degree, community involvment, and Letters of recommendation all play into getting selected. The Navy is looking at the whole person.

Your percentage quote above is really not comparing Apple to Apples. The ASTB is taken by Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. How those scores are used is all up the the individual service. Another variable is wether the scores were used for NROTC, Naval Academy, or OCS. NROTC and Naval Academy have a larger number of slots as compared to OCS. As an OCS guy, you are not competing against other OCS guys for a flight slot. There are also guys&gals that take the ASTB and do nothing with it. So the stat is just that....and not worth that much. I thought if anyone would know that, it would be a Finance major. :D

Listen to your recruiter! It's now a waiting game. Good luck.

Yeah, that's pretty much the exact same thing my recruiter told me. I'm not patient and this "waiting game" is killing me. I thought I could try to squeeze some info out of some one else. Thanks for the reply bud.

Just received my scores

I just got an email with my scores. I got 7/7/8 60. Not as good as I was shooting for, but I think its pretty decent. With a 3.38 college GPA will I have any trouble getting accepted for aviation, or do I need to consider re-taking the test? I know I can wait to hear from a recruiter and get this info, but I'm really impacient. Thanks for your input.

Your scores are more than adequate. I had the same scores, roughly (7/7/9 56) and I got pro=rec'd. It depends on more than simply ASTB and GPA but those are two very important elements of your application. Just make sure you have and keep a clean police record, perform well on the PFT and write a kick ass motivational statement.

Ditto to all - had 7/7/8/59 and I was picked up. Whats your major?
Looks like academically you're set - just make sure you have everything else squared away too.

I know I shouldn't have to ask this, but when do I do the pft thing? I didn't realize I had to do anything physically in the application process. Its not a big deal, I just have to start running. Also what is the motivational statement thing? When I read about that stuff before I though it was for BDCP guys, not everyone who applies. I guess I better start paying more attention. Thanks guys, your info is appreciated.

PRT is done as part of your application for your Final Selection submittal if you are professionally recommended. A lot of recruiters will include it with your appliation for professional recommendation although it is not required then. It is also given once more 30 days before you report to OCS and then onwards at OCS.
