Civilians and flight jackets.

I have a question for some of you grizzled veterans.

I recently rolled into shore duty and a guy in my office is a very serious collector of military gear. One of his favorite collectables is flight jackets. I don't know how many he has, it is safe to say that he has more than one paycheck invested in his collection. At first, I saw them hanging up by the wall of his office, and I thought he just had them on display. He has a lot of other gear in his office as well. This past week, I saw him on his way into work and out at lunch, and he is wearing the jackets.

I have pretty thick skin, but for some reason this really offended me. The jackets that this guy is wearing were issued to aviators who had the right to wear them due to accomplishments that they had made in life. They also have cruise/deployment patches on them to commemorate hard work that was done by the original owner of the jacket. When people see this guy on the street, they don't think that he is just some civilian collector. They associate that jacket with an accomplished Naval Aviator, somthing this person never has been.

Another thing that bothers me is that a lot of flight jackets for sale at auction or e-bay have been stolen from the original owners. Someone tried to steal my father's jacket at one point, and I have been offered a large sum of money for mine at an airport. I would not be surprised if some aviators here have had to replace their jackets due to theft at some point.

I don't believe that this person is doing anything malicious by wearing the jackets. If asked, he will tell you that he bought it on e-bay or wherever he got it. He is also a very nice person.

What's your take? Should I tell the guy that his playing "dress up" is out of line, or just let it go.

I'd say just let it go. Just because he is fascinated by the military and collects the jackets, like the way they look, etc... doesn't mean he is trying to portray himself as something he's not.

Let it go. It's a jacket.

If he's telling tall tales, that's another thing.

I really side with you on this one, it rubs me wrong too. He should know that it's kind of taboo, but if you step up and point it out to him you'll really look like a snobbish ass.

I wouldn't mind someone collecting them, but were I to see them wearing patches and wings they had not earned.... I would take offense (even if I knew they were not claiming them as their own) But still, you can't really talk to him about it...

Think of it this way, how would you feel if you saw an Ensign come waltzing in wearing a leather with deployment patches he hadn't earned? If he was in civilian attire, it wouldn't be WRONG but it would still be "wrong"... that's kind of how I see it. Even without talking about them... by wearing wings/patches you are insinuating that you deserve them.

You know, I could go either way with this. It's one thing to be a fan of Naval Aviation and want to wear a flight jacket as a sign of your passion and respect for the service/community. However, I think it's wrong if this guy is wearing a jacket with specific, personalized nametags for which he has no connection or affiliation with, i.e. deployment patches, nametags of folks he has no connection with, etc. General aviation and squadron patches are fine with his own nametag, but that's it.

But while we're at it, how about the maint chief who wears a leather flight jacket? Or, non-aircrew who wear the green, nomex flight jackets. Yeah, I know it's organizational clothing, but some things should be reserved for those that have earned them. Diatribe over . . . .

I would say a reasonable middle ground would be to address that they shouldn't have wings on them.

Get over it....there a few worse offenses IMHO. Here's one that chaps my a$$:

1. Intel Officer (w/o wings) wearing a LEATHER FLIGHT jacket in uniform.
