Big Watch for Graduation

My son is a PLC Combined 195 grad and just graduated from college. He'll be heading to P'cola when he finishes up TBS in 08.

I want to buy him a nice watch for a graduation gift. Something he could actually use in the cockpit would be nice but mostly a nice watch that he can give to his kid some day. I like TAGs but I'd love to get him something that is actually being used by military pilots.

I've got about a grand to spend.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Semper Fi and Merry Christmas to all.

Opps.

Sorry I didn't search first. Thanks for being gentle with da noob
I would have given you my opinions and suggestions, if I had any. I don't have any experience with fine time pieces, aviation or otherwise. So, I did the next best thing, pointed you to a thread with a lot of info.

If you find one let me know!!!;)

That's a tough price point for watches. I only say that because it seems like there are 300-600$ watches and then there are 2000$ and up watches. As you said, you can go the Tag route...but for a little more money, maybe try to find an Oris or a Hamilton. Something a little different that you won't see everyday.

My experience...and this is just me, is that the best "cockpit" watch is a 40$ Timex or Casio digital. You don't mind if they get beat to hell. I personally can count on one hand the number of times that I have wanted to "use" a watch in the cockpit for anything other than a quick time check. The CR2 etc... faced watches are nice, look snappy etc...but the bottom line for me was always that I didn't want to use a flight computer in the cockpit...even the issued one, let alone one on my watch....that's what NFO's are for.;)

I have had the "Watch, Digital, Pilot Standard" Timex Ironman, $30 from the NEX. I think I am on #3 in 7 years.

They are a good SPY detector, as the indiglo will light up if SPY is cranked up when the Shoes' claim it isn't.

Roger that. Looks like it may be a nice TAG for him and a Casio for his RIO

Rocket-

I love Suunto and I've seen some dudes with that Tissot T-touch. It's got a nice look.

I have bought two watches from Jomashop.com one was my Suunto and the other was my wife's Tag Aquaracer for about 30% less than retail. They are a good outfit as far as I'm concerned.

Good luck, and will you call my Dad and tell him he needs to pony up? Thanks

You might consider a Citizen Navihawk. Couple of hundred bucks, has many functions, and looks nice. DON'T get the Blue Angel edition. That's kind of cheesey.

Agree on both points. There is this one guy who runs around with the Blue Angel edition and it's hard not to say it outloud ... "You are kidding, right?" The other ones are cool.
