Anyone ever get the impression that Cat & A4s are the real life Statler and Waldorf, at least as far as AW is concerned?

I don't think I'd want to be topside on that DDG during unrep, Cat.

Sorry, can't let this recce go. Isn't that a Spruance (DD)? The box launchers look like ASROC to me.

That kind of crap should get you kicked off the board for a week or so! In the "real" (read: aviation) Navy, there are boats and there is "THE BOAT". That is the only distinction we make.

Don't go getting all blue sweater with epaulets on me.

Uh, yeah. Whatever. I can give you any number of professional reasons why it does matter. Some even involve things we call "weapons" and "tactics." I know it's a foreign concept.

But honestly, I was just curious for curiosity's sake.

My part-time job of the time was to identify only the Cold War enemy ships, not our own. Even so I still confused Krestas, Karas, and Kyndas (despite the helpful, "Kynda, t*ts like Linda" mnemonic and others).

For those interested "closet shoes" and others among us, she has the numbers "985" on her bow. A google search may show who she is, and that she has been decommissioned… but soon to sail under a new and interesting, foreign flag.........

Hull number was not required. There was no SPY-1.

Unless it was an older DD, which is what I was getting at. It's been a while since I've seen a bow shot of a Spruance, especially w/ ASROC on the front. Believe me, there was no confusion that it was an Aegis ship, be it CG or DDG.

Oh, I thought that's what you were figurin' since Mumbles called it a DDG which got this whole thing started.

I'm assuming there were some very, very sad people on that ferry. Always remember - puke over the leeward rail, or you will be more sad, and your friends will laugh. :D

During the Doolittle Raid launch in WW2 the seas were so rough that the planes would launch when the nose of the carrier was engulfed in a wave and then by the time they got to the end the nose would be in the air and they would take off no problem. It's good logic, but how f*ckin scared would you be going full power straight at the ocean!

If you have ever cruised in NorPac in the winter or in the South China Sea during a tropical storm, this is pretty common. We had several fly days on Midway where you started down the cat tracks looking at water, waiting for the bow to raise. Trust the LSO's at the back, the shooter at the front.

Ditto for North Atlantics with winds so strong that they told us not to expect a helo to launch to come get us and water so cold that it wouldn't matter anyway. Did on ein 82 and again in 85 and because of Cold War still being on and Bears, Badgers and Bisons enroute to find us, we launched just as described with lumps in our throats. Receovery was pretty sporty with MOVLAS rigged because lens couldn't handle the deck motion. LSOs earned their pay on every recovery.
