Question that came up in conversation in the ready room today, are dependents/non-mil spouses subject to the UCMJ?

Unfortunately they are not.

They can use the UCMJ against you, while they openly do the things they are trying to get you nailed for.

Not sure if SOFA agreements apply to camp followers or not.

SOFA does apply (Thank you AFN commercials!). UCMJ does not. On Okinawa, if one your dependents goes nuts and starts causing a lot of trouble, they can kick them off the island. You have to stay. It's up to you to figure out that's going to work out for you.

The Gunny I worked for in Iwakuni had his stepson deported by Japanese officials for committing aggravated assault and armed robbery. He was bushwhacking Iwakuni shopkeepers as they locked up for the night. When he got caught, my Gunny just wanted to leave him to rot in Japanese prison, but his manatee convinced him otherwise. So instead of just having her 45k of gambling debts to pay for, he added about 15k of 'I'm Sorry Money'. Indigenous personnel were insanely bitter about him being released, as well. But I digress. SOFA definitely applies to dependents.

SOFA yes. Saw a lot of cat fights and girlfriends/fiance's/wives and a 15yr old who thought it would be fun to piss in every dryer at a public laundry mat all of which got hauled back to the states. It's a privilage to be overseas not a requirement.

(lol@Harrier- I love afn commercials...probably watch that even more since there's only what like 3 american stations one of them being AFN!?)

If the crime is serious enough and the host nation government does not prosecute I believe the federal government can prosecute a civilian ubnder certain circumstances. For example, a serviceman's wife kills another serviceman's kid on base, I believe the wife can be prosecuted under federal law when they get back to the states. Don't quote me on that, and I am not certian of any cases, but that has come up recently with some of the contractor shennanigans in Iraq.

They wouldn't have wanted this guy's manatee, except for the blubber. Not the Yakuza guys I knew, anyway.

Nothing worse than watching the SuperBowl on AFN while deployed and getting the following commercial breaks....

"Hi, I'm Vern Clark, this is my wife Dottie..."

"Hi. I'm B.B. Bell, Commander of..."

"Drinking and driving can only hurt the one you...."

So much for all the cool ads.

Are you kidding me? AFN commercials ROCK!!

My personal favorite is the one with the air force "special operations weather dudes" or whatever the fuck they call them. They're snooping and pooping through a riverbed like a scene from Platoon and release a 5 foot diameter RED weather balloon. Man, air force ground guys are super neat-o! They're just like Force Recon or Seals, only with mad weather skillz.

Then there's always the "Don't shake your baby" ads and the OPSEC propaganda from Squeakers the mouse.

Sometimes I miss Okinawa........now is not one of those times.:D

I was at Monterey for a conference when I saw a USAF Major wearing his blues with his pants bloused in his combat boots like an Army paratrooper and topped off with a gray beret. Kind of odd looking, an Air Force guy dressed like that . I had no idea what the guy was and did not have a chance to ask but I looked up the beret later and found out he was a Combat Weatherman. Never knew such a thing existed.

I later got to know a Combat Weatherman, actually a pretty cool guy. Never got a chance to pick on him about that gray beret though. ;)

Thank God for the USAF! They're always good for a laugh. Got me rolling with that one. I can just imagine the infiltration behind enemy lines and then, poof, there goes the weather balloon.:icon_tong

"American Images" is always a classic. Didn't see it much the last time I was on deployment, I wonder if they went away...

When I was in Iraq, USAFEUR Gen "Doc" Somebody-or-other was always on AFN. The guy was awesome! We went to 364's spaces one day for something, and as we walk in their ready room - their chalkboard has something to the effect of "Fly Safe Today - Doc Somebody-or-other sends."

Oh, gag, with the AFN commercials. Being on IA would be pretty tolerable except for those fcking things. Especially the Boots asking the Master Chief about the Right Spirit, and Chief Sexual Harassment Panda. Why do they have to work overtime making the Navy look like a bunch of dorks?

Anyway, back on topic, I believe that the camp followers can be tried under federal law, but not UCMJ. Apllicability of local laws varies accoding to SOFA.

What we really need is to move 5th Fleet to Singapore and make sure the SOFA allows canings of dependants. It'd cut waaaaaay back on these problems.
