Yep Duval reminded me of one of my C.O.s. Good Movie. Only one Marine movie better in my opinion
You've got to be SHITTING me, right? The only good parts of that movie were the first half, in boot camp. There are so many better movies:

what about "Flying Leathernecks" or "The D.I."

The first half (bootcamp) is the closest Hollywood ever came to what I experienced.
I've got a good friend that was there during Tet and he says Kubrick nailed it.
If you ever watch the movie there's a scene where they get in to a CH-34 and they're flying over the jungle and the shadow on the foliage is a huey.

Two scenes from the Great Santini I never get tired of watching:

The first scene where the Marines are getting piss drunk, and the scene where Bull thinks his buddy is in the head and ambushes that Corporal.

"...and if you ever strike a superior commissioned officer again, Atchley, I'll see that your court-martialed!"

Not technically a Marine movie but the Marine urban assault in "The Wind and the Lion" was a real crowd pleaser during my time at TBS. Would make for a great Youtube posting

Snap shots:

Wake Island (1942) ....

Gung Ho .. the story of Carlson's Makin Island Raiders (1943) ....

Guadalcanal Diary (1943) ....

Between Heaven & Hell (1956) ....

The D.I. (1957) ....

Maybe not the "best" from a technical standpoint ... remember ... no CGI back-in-the-day ... minimal psychological hang-ups, some very Gung-Ho --- remember, it was WW2 .... but give 'em a try ... you'll like most of them.

No Academy Award winners here ... but then, look what's been "winning" Oscar of late ... :)

John Milius at his best .... If you can sit still in your seat while this scene is running from Fleet Landing to the gates of the Bashaw ... you're not an American military man .... :)
