So I learned recently that the Soviets were basically shopping around post-WWII for the Communist strongman they were going to install in North Korea, and apparently Kim Il-Sung got the job because he had an in with Lavrentiy Beria, who hand-picked him.

Apparently the KGB had to ghostwrite some of his early major speeches because he was educated in Chinese and barely spoke any Korean.

That's actually Heaven Lake on Paektu Mountain, which has a mythic status to Koreans a little bit like Olympus to the Ancient Greeks. Kim Jong Il was born there, at least according to the the Dear Leader's official bio.



I bet you Heaven Lake doesn't have a couple hundred year old stump floating around on it though.

Had a guy in my unit named Brian who had a big bald head and was a serious engineering nerd. I'm a dyslexic typer, and would constantly spell his name as Brain, which auto-correct did not catch. He finally sent a reply to all email back to me stating that his name was BRIAN...His callsign from then on was "The Brain". Which he learned to love.
