New Cool Thing: Satellite Radio coverage in CENTCOM. Not shilling for the company, just heard about them too late to take advantage while I'm here. Thought some of youse guys headed for the Sandbox might be interested.
I thought Sirius and XM were the only Satellite Radio services, but turns out there's also WorldSpace. First heard it in Kenya; an Army CA team had it set up in their comms tent waaaaaay out in the middle of nowhere. Sat footprint covers parts of Europe, India, SW Asia, and east Africa...all of CENTCOM, in other words.
The channel lineup is similar to XM/Sirius, though not as extensive: Top 40, music, news, specialty, etc. News channels include BBC, CNN, Fox, NPR. Some stations are targeted for African or Asian audiences, but most of them are in English, and mostly Western European or American music. Good music mix, lots of good stations.
Can't vouch for how well it'd work on a boat, EMI issues, etc, but it'd be very money on a boots-on-the-ground gig. It's not expensive and it's worth checking out. AFN and your iPod get old pretty fast on an IA.
