Winter training on the road or treadmill?

Alright so we're in the middle of winter, and for those of us who live in the frozen north, running every day gets a bit difficult. It's almost always snowing and the everage temperature her in Michigan is around 10 degrees in the mornings when I run.

I was just wondering if anyone had come up with any alternatives to road running or anything else that is working for them.

Thanks

Well, it's not quite as cold here in Virginia, but for the past few weeks the temps been in the mid-30s at best. I read an article on runnersworld.com that recommends running on a treadmill with the incline set to 1 degree to make up for the lack of wind resistance and forward push compared to road running.

It's just sooo boring. I've been thinking about mixing it up using a stepper, bike, or elliptical machine, but I know I've got to get my joints ready for the pounding. So I've stuck with running so far.

I used to use a stair-stepper all the time. I would make good time on it, with fairly strenuous workouts. I really felt a difference when I started running. Nothing prepares your legs for the "pounding" more than running.

Currently I use a treadmill. I have a harder time running on the treadmill than running the PRT (or PFA). I think it has to do with not being able to adjust your stride as much (your pace is set by the speed setting, with little variation).

This website has some pretty good tips on running in cold weather - as well as common running injuries (I don't know from experience - in Texas we don't really have to worry about ice or snow that much):

lets change this thread to "How to avoid boredom while running on a treadmill" because I think this seems to be a common problem, any insights other than an MP3 player?

Gonzo, I go to school in Mass. and its been real cold here too, but running in crappy conditions will help you out in the long run. I say try to do the outside thing, just dont kill yourself. As for the treadmill, I would probably kill myself if I stepped on one again, its just better all aroud to pound the ground in my eyes. Plus, that way you have something to work for...getting back to where you started.
