Will I be DQ’d if I go to the doc one month out from OCS for knee pain after running?

Hey guys, so I got accepted into the Sept. 15th OCS class for SNA. Everything seemed to be going really well and my dreams finally started to feel real. Well, about a month ago, I started exercising for the first time in over 5 years. I am a server so I am not out of shape by any means, but I didn’t run or workout any.

Everything was going really well until last Friday when I ran a really hard run on my treadmill and after that, I did burpees and squats. About an hour or so passes and the area around knee started to hurt. I took a 3 day break, and it started to feel better until today when I had to do my pre OCS PRT. I passed with flying colors with no pain at all, until about an hour after I was finished then it started hurting and it’s been bothering me ever since. I do not have a limp when I walk, I can walk normally etc, but it’s noticeable and annoying. It typically will subside the more I walk on it ironically.

Now, it’s kind of hard to pinpoint the pain. It’s to the right of my knee (on my left leg) and it feels more like a pinched nerve/muscle more than a bone injury? Of course I could be completely wrong and it could be the opposite but I can feel pain behind my knee too if I move it a certain way, like in the muscles opposite of my knee (the pit of the leg). I’m not sure what it is which is why I want to go to the doctor to try and get it fixed before heading to Newport. It also hurts to stretch.

My thing is I am scared to go to the doc because I feel like they will DQ me at OCS for going to the doc to get it looked at, but at the same time, I do not want to go to OCS, and then get sent home/DQ’d because I injured myself by trying to push through.

hopefully this is just from my body not being used to running at all for over 5 years to suddenly going hard and trying to max PT scores.

Wait, your knees aren't supposed to hurt all the time?

First of all, you need to take care of yourself. Go to the doctor and get looked at.

Second, going to the doctor does not equal a diagnosis for something that will DQ you. You may be told to take a few days to ice/heat it and then start slower on the running.

Or they may tell you they have to amputate. But take things one step at a time.

Instead of self-diagnosing yourself, get seen and evaluated by a professional. It could be something, it could not. Being aware of a problem, not telling your recruiter, AND not being seen only gets worse over time - not only the medical piece but also the integrity piece.

Welcome to the Navy. This isn’t going to be the first time you have a problem and have to resolve + communicate with your leadership.

Have you tried Vicks VaporRub? In the old days, it was an elixir that cured everything. Maybe follow it up with some Robitussin.

My take...here is your problem

You went too hard too fast. Your mind is writing checks your connective tissue can't cash.

He's not going to be able to fix it, no matter what it is. Not enough time for a doctor to fix it. Best he can do is maybe diagnose it (although I doubt it), and between now and Sept 15th prescribe some physical therapy.

It's the PT you want to see, not the doctor. If you can just ask your PCP to prescribe some PT visits, that is what I would do.

The PT order will say, "Generalized knee pain blah, blah, blah" and the PT will poke and prod and then have you do some exercises while also doing some soft tissue work on you. Exercises to do at home, along with ice or other treatments.

Great points.

For OP, @taxi1 mentioned it but take this as a lessons learned to be prepping for OCS much earlier instead of procrastinating at the very end.

The second you started the application process should have been your green light to start prepping physically.

I injured my hip flexor days before I was supposed to leave for OCS. It was so bad I couldn't even stand without excruciating pain. I told my recruiter and they pushed my date back and I had to go see a doctor and a physical therapist.

All I had to do was submit all the medical paperwork to my recruiter and I was good to go. They just want to see if you're good enough to run around again.

Go see a doctor and handle it now because if your leg still hurts at OCS, they will just put you in student pool until you're healed. And student pool is mind-numbingly boring.

So, almost the exact same thing happened to me.

I had a pilot slot, had been working out on and off and went on an uneventful hike and had the same symptoms a few days later. The hard to locate knee pain on my left knee, on the right side. Some swelling and difficulty with mobility.

However I'm not a doctor, other people have said the same thing and they're right, go see a professional.

The part I can help you with is what could happen moving forward. First of all, take care of your health and be seen by the right professionals, even if the navy thing works or not, you only have one body and will (hopefully) be alive longer than you're government property. No opertunity in the navy is worth your long term health.

Work with your recruiter and be honest. They may push you back to another class or put your training on hold, but you won't be able to do anything anyway if you show up injured. Yeah, they may give you a hard time, I had some boat chief play up a whole mess of "do you even still want to go to OCS?" When I told them I was dealing with issues and needed some time to heal. But they're just moving bodies to make their numbers, and probably don't really care about you, or have been burnt out with peoples flimsy excuses and don't bother to discern what's legit and what's not. Who knows, but either way you have to communicate, be truthful, and stick up for yourself.

The last and hardest part is what happens after medical attention and rehab. Hopefully this goes away and never comes back, but if you had an injury, there will probably be lasting effects that come and go. During my medial process they couldn't really find much, just looked like swelling and maybe a small hole worn in the cartlidge. I showed up to OCS with some minor mobility issues, and pushed through until I couldn't, then the medical staff took a crack at it. They're experts at that kind of muscle/joint stuff. The crankiest physical therapist I've ever met took a look at my knee, realized how tight the tendons were and contorted my leg in one of the most painful ways possible, which loosened it up and since then, with the techniques he showed me, I have been able to do whatever I wanted to, with minimal issues.

Take care of yourself and tell the truth, that's all you really can do.
