Dave, honestly I don't think this is a "set rule" or anything... but I would imagine you could call yourself a Student Naval Aviator when you start API, and begin on the path to becoming a Naval Aviator.
 
Yes, I agree. Only when you start Aviation Preflight Indoctrination (API) can you really call yourself a student of Naval aviation or also known as a student naval aviatior (SNA).
