What does the V in VT stand for??

I've always wondered what the V stands for when used to abbreviate a squadron. VT-6, is ...(fill in here) training squadron 6.

I have always heard it was the designation for any "heavier-than-air" aircraft (anything thats not a blimp or balloon).

I think it used to mean that, but when Helos came around, I think it changed to fixed-wing. A helo is heavier than air.
