Was that the actual Big Beautiful Doll? Sucks to see a piece of history turn into a smoking hole in the ground, but damn glad the pilot got out! He needs a wheelbarrow now, so he can carry his balls around with him.

Is anyone surprised that the Spad landed fine?

The "scratching his head" photo reminded me of this picture. One of my old XOs. Great story first hand. He now lives every day to the fullest. Keeping up with him was tough.

While waiting for my wife and daughters-in-law to finish shopping at the mall yesterday, I came across the book "Punching Out: Stories of High Speed Ejections" in Barnes & Noble. I served with two of the individuals who had stories in the book. One of them, Russ "Redneck" Pearson, ejected from an A-7, inverted, under water, after his jet had gone over the side of the Connie at night. Broke his back, but he survived. But the story doesn't end there.............read the book.

Odd...(in 1996) I was giving a tour of NSAWC to a former A-4 driver, turned FS, who...when seeing one of the A4 pics on the wall...said that this plane didn't exist anymore as he had dumped in near Subic Bay. I *think* that is the one where he woke up underwater, with a broken back and ended up heading off to med school.
