Vance to HT

USMCZ06

"Stranger"
Don't sweat the whole thing coming from Vance to HT's. Everyone says "Oh no, you're from Vance, you're all jacked up and you're going to have trouble." It's become more of a rumor and an overstatement. This is no longer the case as far as the SMS/CAP deal. They allow Vance students to sit on at least 2 CPT briefs as well as flight briefs to introduce the student to the Navy/USMC style brief and so that you can get a good idea of what is expected of you. The biggest change from Vance is in the brief, the strict adherence to the MPTS, and the verbatim memory of EP's and Notes/Warnings/Cautions, as well as maneuver procedures out of the FTI. The best advice I could give a student on the briefs is to have "diarrhea of the mouth" when it comes to the discussion items, EPs and any of the plus+ items, and procedures. Instructors are very heavy on the FTI, pocket checklist, NATOPs, OPNAV, Squadron SOP, RWOP and all the other great pubs. Remember that you are setting the tone for your flight the minute you start the brief. No great flight ever started with a bad brief. The sim instructors do not mess around. Even on your CPTs you had better go in there with a lot of practice on the prestart/start/takeoff/shutdown checklists and have all of the graded/required EPs memorized verbatim. This all sounds like a lot, but I guarantee you that you will enjoy HTs 10 fold compared to Vance.
