Iheard through the Grapevine that if you travel in uniform that some airlines will "bump" you up from Coach to business or first class...

Has anyone done this? And what uniform did you wear? What uniforms can you wear on a plane?

It has to be a leave or liberty uniform. Haven't done it recently, but the last time I did I got nothin'. Except a lot of free beer in the airport...

Whats the leave/liberty uniform? I thought if you go on leave or liberty, you wear civies. Then again, I'm still a Mid (for 2 more days) :D

deployment sucks
i saw some army guys wearing camis in the seattle airport who were on standby; american wouldn't even bump them up to the front of the standby list.

Not certain about the Navy, but the Marine Corps has certain uniforms designated as leave & liberty uniforms. i.e. you can wear them on leave or liberty. Examples - Dress Blue B/D, Service A/C. No more, no less. I think for the Navy it's summer whites or SDBs. Not sure about any others...

Anyway, I digress. Personally, I would not wear my uniform on a flight. Let the guys who are in the "sh!t" get the rewards when they are travelling...you know what I am saying?
Or on their way back from the $hit... I didn't pay for many drinks in Shannon, Ireland... We had to wear cammies, and oh darn - after being sober for 7 months, had to hang out in the airport for 2 hours. What to do - "Oh, look an airport bar!"

I was traveling in my whites last summer, heading down to Mayport, me and another Middy. So we're supposed to wear our whites when we travel for summer cruises. We both got bumped up to First Class. But who knows, we were either lucky or there was space for us and someone was looking after us. :angel_125

But that was probably pure luck...I'm not one to talk cuz I get bumped up to First Class half the time I fly! But that just must be based on my looks! haha

phrogpilot had it right with the uniforms to wear (Navy wise anyway). I would wear my uniform when going on leave, to show off your patriotism of course, and see what comes of it... :icon_wink

While we're on the subject of leave......

Say I report to pcola and I dont start IFS for, oh lets say a few months. Would I be allowed to take leave? Or have we, as Ensigns, not accumulated enough leave?

Also, how does leave work for Thanksgiving, Christmas ,etc? Is it like nrotc and you pass a chit up the COC? Who do we give our chit to?

This is for you peeps in the know. Share your experiences and/or advice. Cheers!

You pass a chit up, but yes you can take leave. They'll let you go in the hole on leave, since you haven't really earned any days yet. For holidays you usually get the days off, but if you want to leave the local area (350 mile radius I believe) you must take/request leave.

Except of course for cruises that go overseas... DO NOT wear your uniform.

Personally, I wouldn't- Flying in uniform when you have to is a pain enough as it is, got to worry about keeping the uniform clean, forgetting your combo cover etc. That and you stick out.

In addition to other reasons people mentioned to not do it (Letting those who really deserve that free drink get it etc), I for one enjoy being able to blend in when I travel.

I don't have to deal with those who do and don't support the current administration, military etc attempting to engage me in debates about policy, missions, the current wars and whatever other topics they feel like.
If I do chose to talk to anyone I can be myself and not have to guard every response because I don't know if the person I am talking to is really is (ie a member of the media etc) and I don't have to deal with any preconcieved notions they have about the military.

Probably the biggest thing for me though is the idea that not sticking out might allow me to be dismissed as being just another passenger (and thus not any more of a threat) long enough to get the jump on someone if the situation ever called for it.

Yeah, why in the world would you wear your uniform? Flying COMAIR is uncomfortable enough without worrying about your uniform. You've got about as much chance of getting a 1st class upgrade as you do winning the lottery.

Could not agree more! Dont wear your uniform on a commercial flight.

Man, doesn't anyone have to watch the DOD "Hard Target" AT movie anymore?!?!

Seriously though... If you want to stick out and get attention, do so by wearing a big red clown nose and a speedo... don't wear your uniform.

I have seen a few guys get bumped up to first class, but they were in desert cammies on the way back home from Iraq (United). Flying in and out of the DC area you see guys flying in uniformall the time, but there are so many of them they do not get preferential treatment.

I believe in being a hard target too, the less conspicuous you are the less likely you are to getting the smackdown.

Not wearing a uniform does not always mean that military guys don't stick out. There was about 20 Marines who got on a flight I was taking a few months ago. How could I tell they were Marines? The short haricuts, green flight bags, patent leather uniform shoes and regulation khaki belts with jeans were indicators but the T-shirts with Marine, Marine Artillery, Devil Dog and whatever other Ugghh thing relating to the Marines were what sealed it for me :icon_tong .

At American Airlines all military traveling to or from OEF/OIF get use of the Admirial's Club by flashing their orders. Once inside, I was told by a young trooper, you don't have to buy a thing, the frequent traveling business people take care of ya. Similarly, I have found most military do get special treatment when in uniform. Doesn't happen all the time, but frequently. With planes runnning full and airlines lossing money you won't get an upgrade if a guy from Microsoft wants to pay big $$ for the seat. On the other hand, the flight attendants will treat you well no matter where you sit.

About standing out. There is risk. If there is an actual terrorist incident, you will likely be the first targeted. It has happened before. Anyone remember what happened to the Navy diver in the 1980's? On the other hand, short of a complete, violent and instantaneous take over of the cabin, you may be helpful to the cabin staff. At my airline the fight attendants are trained to look for military types to help out as trusted agents in any emergency. You may be reseated to an exit row to help with doors. If an aviator, you may be asked to talk to the Captain on the interphone about what you see or hear (remember, pilots are not allowed out of the cockpit to inspect the cabin any more) or you may be asked to help secure a passenger. Military EOD personnel have been asked (not by my airline, but it has happened often enough that I am sure it is promoted)) to stop by the cockpit and identify themselves, in or out of uniform.

It is your choice. Weigh the risk. Is it more likely you can be off assistance in an emergency or minor security problem if readily IDed or is it more likely you will get a knife in the back of the neck while you play Halo on your laptop. Don't forget to factor in the occasional free drink ;) .
