Thoughts and prayers from here. I did some training and a flight with those guys a couple of years ago, so this one hits close to home.

Two seater is the trainer?

Yes, the TU-2S. Apparently there were only 5 of them.

Correct, only 5, each of them hand-built by Skunk Works. Each jet is just a tiny bit different than the others, so their intermediate/depot-level maintenance (on-site at Beale) is less like an assembly line, and more like a custom shop. It's pretty neat to see.

Shooter was a great guy and and an even better family man. He has 6 children and recently became a grandfather.

He was also a fellow Gold Winger. He flew P-3's in Jax, taught at VT-6 in the mid-2000's and finished up his Navy time flying C-9's out of Oceana as an FTS reservist. He transferred over to the AF and U-2's in early 2010 and had been here ever since.

If anyone is so inclined, a fund is being set up by a squadron mate to help with family travel and other expenses.
