Very speculative.

As Maintenance Manager I sometimes wonder what repairs are approved and which are not by the manufacturers/vendors. Holes nicks and dents in composites are definately a no-go. Holes nicks and dents in aluminium is a whole different story. The Structural Repair Manual (SRM) provides in some cases speed-patch repairs with Hi-speed tape as a temp fix and catagorize this for a certain amount of time (or deferral to a home/maint station).

The guys in uniform could be Ground Engineers, not everybody in an uniform is flightdeck crew. In my company G/Es fly along and performing F/E duties as the new generation of computers can't do such repairs. Computers only detect and can isolate problems.

The guy in civvy clothes could be a companies Structure Engineer or TechRep approving such a repair after having intense contact with the AOG desk from the manufacturer. It's a poor show however to perform such a repair on the ramp, but if well prepared, it's not uncommon when commercial pressure is an issue. Operations dept might considered this and might have chosen the best. The dis/embarking of passengers could lead to a crew duty problem for continuing the flight.

Again very specalutive, but I agree, a poor show in front of the pax.

Yes there are times when speed tape is an appropriate repair. But I've never heard it being appropriate on a flight control surface.

I did. Actually last week.
Leading Edge Slats of the MD-11 are aluminium parts and therefore repairable with speed patches as per SRM. There was a puncture roughly about a quarter of a square inch.
Deferred to next A check or sufficient maintenance opportunity (which ever comes first).

I "field repaired" the shredded engine nacelles of my A-4 with ordnance (speed) tape :eek::eek:... with the phonecon concurrence of maintenance at home plate :eek::eek:.... it was either that or I didn't get home.

I was on the transient line at an AF base, no less -- it drove the Zoomies crazy.

I stand corrected. This is why I just fly them and leave the fixing to the experts.

I thought I'd posted this before ... anyway ... long story short:

South Texas - Andrews AFB for a party @ Annapolis and the weekend ... a line of CB's was across the route @ 400 miles wide ... requested ATC keep me "clear" of any echoes/cells as I had no radar ... they said "roger that, will do" .. and then promptly steered me into the Mother of all CB's ... it got so dark that I had to raise my dark visor in the daytime ... :eek: ... up, down, round & 'round ... it's one of the times I've truly been "scared" in the airplane.

I landed @ Maxwell AFB ... called Maint in Texas ... they gave me the drill to follow ... I did it (the tape; lots of ordnance tape), went to the 'O Club bar .... had a great time, BTW -- as I was the only Navy guy in town and in my zoom-bag to boot ... lots of free drinks, pu-pu's and chit-chat, .... the next day I did a high power turn and was on my way to Andrews ..... good party @ Annapolis, too ...

Strange, but true ....
