the ARCO book is great. I was a criminal justice major, didn't need any real higher math. calc and physics are FAR FAR more than you'll need, however, it will not hurt you. study the crap outta that ARCO book, especially the Spacial Apriception portion.

MS Flight Simulator

Also this may seem weird but get a version of Microsoft Flight Simulator, the newest edition. It has a trainer on there and its fool proof way of teaching yourself the avionics portion of the test. I tried and it really increased my knowledge of flight info because Im a more hands on kinda person.

sgtdube,
ARCO was good for me and also, there is a link on here for a couple of practice tests. I took it a year ago so I forget where to find it on the website, but take it..IT HELPS. Anybody on here know where on the website he can find it?

Sure enough...My OSO gave me a study guide for the ASTB and almost all of it was a zerox copy of Microsoft flight simulator's ground school booklet. Very indepth

Before I go driving to Carlsbad or San Juan Capistrano... where is the ARCO book sold? Barnes and Noble/Borders type stores?

Yes, both Borders and Barnes and Noble have the Arco book and different officer candidate study guides. Just look in test guide section.

let me just say this, i know nohing about flight and passed the ASTB on my first try, if you just have general knowledge of ACT and asvab type questions or if you are good at taking tests, you will pass it fine.

i definitly utilized the arco book however i'm hearing that the new format of the astb is very difficult (being computerized). my oso told me that there is an 80% failure rate, not to burst any bubbles but i definitly recommend studying and thoroughly understanding angle of the test. i completed the old exam and scored 7/7/7 not sure what my oar is but i have a feeling the new astb format makes it a lot more difficult to reach those top tier scores. as far as physics and calc you probably wont be implementing any of that tho they will probably come in handy as far as providing a foundation for the broad theme and underlying concepts.

For those who do not pass the ASTB prior to contracting, or those of you who will wait until the last board of the year to make a decision. You can take a GROUND contract and then take the ASTB after you come back from Officer Candidates School (OCS) and contract AIR. It's a simple program change. Your OSO can do a lot of things, you just have to ask the right questions. However, your OSO is always going to want you AIR because that's the hardest slot to fill. Hardest to fill because either 1) People can't pass the test or 2) People can't pass the air phys (eyes). I hope this helps.

Ok, I took the test alreay and realized the only thing that was helpful at all was the ARCO ASTB book. I found all the gouge and air knowledge to be useless. I did not have any questions on that. My prioir experience helped me on the naval terms, but thats abou it. 8 8 8 was my score. Thanks everyone..
