Hello everyone SNA here awaiting OCS Aug 2 '03! Anyone else out there have the same OCS date? Anyway I recently had shoulder surgery and now have two small screws permanently attaching tendon to bone. On the NOMI site I found that this is a "waiverable condition",h opefully I can get that waiver! I was just wondering how many SNA's or soon to be have permanent hardware, or have been granted a waiver for a problem that was corrected surgically. Thanks for your help guys.

Goose, I have a surgical plate that was used to correct a broken 5th metacarple from 9 years ago. I haven't actually gotten a waiver for it yet, nor have I even sent in my package, but my recruiter tells me it won't be a problem. I read the same NOMI guidlines for retained hardware and feel pretty good about my chances of getting it. I'm guessing you had your surgery after you got your SNA acceptance. If so what has your recruiter said about it?

Glad to hear that your recruiter doesn't think it will be a problem. I have a friend in Kingsville right now that has pins in his knee. He had them before he applied for the pilot slot and it took awhile to get the waiver but he got it. As for me I swore in on a friday and the following tuesday I slipped on a hill at work and subluxed my shoulder. Sublux is a mild dislocation. I went to see the Orthopedic specialist and told him what I was doing and we decided that since I had a year until OCS now is the time to fix the problem. So I had surgery to correct the problem. I don't think it will be a big deal but my recruiter has told me to "keep my options open". We shall see. Good luck to you Chris

Goose, thanks for the vote of confidence. I was just looking over the NOMI waiver guidlines again and I think from what you've told me about your condition, you shouldn't have a problem. After all, one of the first things stated is that "retained hardware in the upper and lower extremities is NCD provided there has been resolution of the underlying orthopedic problem..." I think that would apply to both of us. It seems that the real concern from the Navy's perspective is the problem that the hardware was meant to fix.

Valion,
I sure am that big tall guy who was recently in a sling down at Metro!
Just got out of it last tuesday and I start physical therapy next week. Sounds like fun from what I have heard.... Looks like we are going to have to go the boiler room and get a beer one of these day we are both down at Metro! How are things with the Navy treating you...are you still in the application process? Are you or anyone else for that matter in Alpha Eta Rho?

Chris
Sounds like the NOMI waiver should be possible for us, now its just the "needs of the Navy"! Keep us up to date on your waiver application

Hey Goose,

I'll definitly hit ya up on that beer, (wont hit up the damaged arm though), I'm dropping my package in December, just gotta go run my PRT and have more grades. I've been in collage for a year and I'm a Junior, my recruiter said I'm moving so fast that I don't have enough grades yet for the review board.

I'm the Pledge Captian for this semesters AHP group. If I can manage to snake my way out of work, I'll be up at the Toga party this weekend. (I think I need sig's from you btw ..

For all you guys worrying about getting injury waivers I'll just let you know that one of my friends easily got waived for a bunch of pins in his ankle and reconstructive shoulder surgery that he sustained while playing rugby. The docs didn't seem like they were as 'out to get you' as many might think.
