What type of course rules does Moody have? Are they more complex or easier than Whiting or Corpus? Also, is the T-6 an easier airplane to learn than the T-34C? I realize it is faster, but it is also more modern and possible more stable. I have a PPL with about 85 hours in C172s and a few hours in a Piper 260B Comanche (PA-24-260B). I know the added speed in Comanche takes some getting used to versus the Skyhawk- Comanche cruises at 170 knots! Any info appreciated! Thank you.

11-2-T6 (Cypress Ops) is a little bit to learn in the beginning, but you get used to it. A/F has some departure and arrival procedures designed to funnel you through one point from the MOA to get you back into the pattern, but it's not hard at all. Not sure how Whiting or NGP does it.
You'll be hard pressed to find someone who has flown the T34 and the -6 unless it's an IP at Sherman, so I dont think there is anyone qualified to answer your second question. Although digitial cockpit is veeeeeery nice... I can say that at least. Much better than steam gauges, way more accurate and easy to read.

Do you have partial panel instrument approaches? If so do they make you turn off the moving map? What kind of GPS is it (IFR certified)?shoo24 said:

Yeah... two words: Pattern Party. Do it a hundred times on the ground at 5 miles an hour before you have to do it in the air at 150 KIAS or whatever the pattern speed is... can't remember anymore. Spence was open in the past; I don't recall ever having to know any ops for that, it was always just an emergency field. Were they talking about using it as an aux field and doing pattern work there?
We never did partial panel... although with the two EFIS displays if one goes down you just hit composite mode and all the information comes up on the other display. Gotta love digital. They never failed everything on us though, since we never did radar approaches at Moody you couldn't really do a no-gyro PAR or something... First time I really hit PP was with the Navy. Then you might as well not even look at the ADI, because you'll pretty much never get to use it in instruments.

Spence is opening as an aux field for pattern work. Got my Spence AFT forms the other day. How much do Sims count? Seems like some instructors give better grades than others. How important are those first few sims vs actual flights and later sims?

The GPS is RNAV-certified... the Texan is a /G aircraft, just not VNAV-capable... that's a LOT more money.
The two biggest problems there are, as mentioned-- no TACAN, and no beta. With the EHSI/GPS avionics... along with using paired frequencies, not having TACAN isn't much of a problem. Not having beta? Meh, at a Chair Force base with those ridiculously long runway, it shouldn't be an issue.
Otherwise it's nice having OBOGS (you can go higher without worrying about the dumb bottle), it's easier to handle with the TAD and the more user-friendly trim, and it's got about twice as much power, so you have more room to play in aerobatics and forms.
