SXSW 2010 - March 17-21

Is anyone going to South by Southwest this year? It's coming up in just a couple of weeks. For anybody unfamiliar, SXSW is a huge music/art/film fest that takes place over 10 days every March.

The big draw is the music fest, which happens during the last five days; several hundred bands (stand-up comics, too) from all over the world perform at clubs and bars throughout downtown Austin. Most of the acts are pretty obscure, but it's worth the $5-10 cover at most of the places because they group similar shows together, so you can stick around if you like what you hear.

For those currently in Corpus or Kingsville, it's not a bad drive up to Austin (<4hrs), especially if you have a couple of days off. If nothing else, UT is on spring break that week, so there are plenty of coeds hanging out on 6th Street all day. You're about a mile from the university and just a couple of blocks from Town Lake and Zilker Park, so there's a lot of other stuff to do before most of the good shows start. Also, it's a total freakshow downtown (think: Las Vegas, but most of the people that look homeless in Austin are actually working on their BFA in art history at UT).

Ran into that problem last year with most of the female bar population lacking in personal hygiene.
Ahh, now that's not true. As long as you avoid Crystal Method and all the Phish cover bands, there really aren't that many weirdos inside. Besides, hippies are too cool for bars, so most of them just roam the streets asking for money or congregate at the Whole Foods on Lamar.

Well first of all SXSW is ghey... Its just a time for coked out record company reps to come into town, spend their lable's money on blow, and talk shit with all the other reps about all the ghey butt rock bands they signed this year. SXSW was started as a way for bands to be 'discovered' and it never followed through. It brings money to Austin and thats why it stays around, but it's dying anyway... Good riddance.

Second, not many hippies hang around asking for money around 6th and Lamar... they mostly hang out on S. Congress or on The Drag.

Third MOST of the female college population at UT doesn't even approach hippie status. Sure you go to places like Emo's and Red 7 and you're going to run into a less hygenic crowd, but if you stick to the Brazos area of 6th street, or went south to 5th or even 4th st, youre in good shape. W 6th is where the young professional crowd usually hangs out, so think hot girls that have jobs and money... leave that to the more experienced Austin bar patrons though...
