Stiff competition for Navy PAO Reserves

VP Biden’s son joins Navy Reserve:

The attorney and former lobbyist applied for a commission into the Navy Reserve as a public affairs officer and was selected, the Navy said Friday. Because Hunter Biden is 42, he needed a special waiver to be accepted, but that is not uncommon. He is one of seven candidates recommended for a direct commission for public affairs.

If you got picked up for board for PAO reserves, big congrats! You are with elite company.

Maybe the only thing more elite is direct commission JAG, reserve and active duty. The active duty DCO JAG program took only 3-5 for many years, sometimes completely closed. I suspect it isn't that tight now. It got to the point it was called "congress' program" because the only guys selected to the reserves were congressmen and their senior aides. On the active side it always seemed like it was a senator's or congressmans' son getting the nod.

DCO JAG no longer takes people, I suspect that is why he didn't go that route, prior service JAG takes almost 40 per year.

It is interesting he was picked up for PAO we were constantly pinged that any PAO applicant had to have experience in the field such as newscaster, writer, as well as relevant degree, I am sure we can all guess/specultate how he skirted past that.

Not surprised given my experience. When they were taking 3-5 a year the navy was much bigger. I had thought that maybe with so many JAGs into operational support stuff the program was still open. How does the prior service JAG thing work? Is it any prior service or does it have to be commissioned? Are they DCO to JAG on graduating or do they participate in the JAG Student program?

I am guessing DCO PAO is going to become what the JAG Corp was to Congress in my day.

Navy Reserve DCO is an equal opportunity path for prominent folks of both parties to serve including George P. Bush (Intel Officer and son of Jeb Bush and possible future political candidate), Mark Lippert (Intel Officer and current Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs) and Senator Mark Kirk (Intel Officer, though not sure if he was a staffer before or after commissioning).

Of course there are are other opportunities like the National Guard, Beau Biden serves as a JAG in the Deleware National Guard and Michael Haley, husband of Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina, is a Medical Services Officer and technician with the South Carolina National Guard.

Of course. And the Guard tends to be more likely to respond to local influence. In any case, the military is happy to keep both parties happy. But not every case you site is a possible case of political influence. The Army Reserve and Guard have been wanting JAGS in the past. I know because my brother in law pursued both paths successfully without any connections. Not so sure about the SC Guard, but generally all medical positions are hard to fill.

I agree, but when the feedback from the board was for years is "experience in the field is a must" it does make you wonder if they didn't take notice of the name, especially when you look at what he has done in the civilian sector and notice that it isn't in the public affairs field (broadcasting for instance).

I am sure this isn't the first time it has happened and I am sure it won't be the last, I hope for the people that serve under and around him that he rises to the occassion and shows what a benefit he can be.

I am not suggesting each one is a case of political influence but you are definitely right that the military is more than happy to dole out a few slots to folks who have more influence than others on the Hill, in statehouses or at the White House. It is usually a win-win for the military in that they now have a natural advocate and most likely a dedicated member serving their country.

It makes me wonder too and I also hope that he serves his country well.

Bringing this thread back from the dead on the news today that Ensign Biden's Navy career ended after his very first drill weekend. Sad, especially with the incredibly low DCO PAO quota each year.
