Stephen Colbert buzzes his hair in front of the troops

Not sure how many Colbert Report viewers we have here, but I caught this last night and considered it one of the most epic TV events in recent history. I'm the type to scowl when I see movie "Marines" with full heads of hair, so you can imagine my surprise when a wise-ass comedian a) went to Iraq to broadcast his show live for our guys and gals deployed there and b) actually had his head shaved by a General "under direct order" from the President.

I thought it was kind of interesting anyway; maybe I'm just sleep deprived.

Watch the video, feat. General Odierno and President Obama.

I was supposed to go to that, missed it because I had to pull late shift. He was over at Liberty, Sather (where I am deployed) is only a mile down the road

I've been watching this story from when they first announced it in the mainstream media about a week ago. Good on him for going over there and doing that. (Plus his one-liners are pretty funny too.)

My only big wish (and this is not a gripe) for the high profile morale shows is that they would do more of them away from the Liberty-Victory complex (that is the humongous base around the Baghdad airport) and bring some of the big shows out to a crappy hole-in-the wall FOB or COP. Now I know there are a lot of valid reasons that doesn't happen, not the least of which is it would be just like a USO show skipping the carrier and going to a random frigate instead. Anyway...

It's a huge deal for a celebrity to get over to Iraq (or the 'stan) at all so when they do I love 'em for it.

Parting shot- if you want to read a good bio then look up GEN Odierno (especially if you think you get deployed a lot and have a high optempo). My interservice grips notwithstanding, he's the man.

That being said, the shows at the FOB/Frigate would help morale for those there a lot.

I think the morale on the CG I deployed on got WORSE when the CV basically shut down for a big USO show with hot women, entertainers, etc..

And what did we get on the CG? Ice cream.

Oh they did it nice. I heard when you get your first haircut they cut you up sometimes.
I like the Camo suit though

Actually only the shoes got ice cream, you got an air plan that said the wing is busy with the USO show, hot women, etc... Launch LAMPS. At least that's what would have happened with our CG.

Depends on how you define high profile. I spent many a day/night flying not AS high profile (but still pretty decent) entertainers all across Iraq. If I remember, I took the Redskins cheerleaders out to Al Qaim on the Syrian border. Some of the entertainers are definitely willing to do more than others...

How much were the cheerleaders willing to do?

I had absolutely no idea Carey was in the Marines for 6 years. His picture in uniform on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drew_Carey#Early_life

That's why I get a little depressed when I happen to catch "The Price is Right" before heading off to class. It makes me want to forgo the car and instead create a Fartlek course out of the route. I would, if there were showers at my school. And I weren't so damn lazy already.
