I bought the Princeton Review book for the SAT and raised my SAT score by 300 points. I made a list of the words from the vocab section and basically memorized all of the ones that I didn't regularly use in conversation. Went back through the math and remembered a lot of stuff I had forgotten since high school.

KEEP AT IT as far as the application goes, a lot of people make it on their second or third tries.

Another thing about CLEPs, they're awesome if you're doing correspondence or anything along those lines, but useless if going to a major university. My friend and I were both selected last year for STA. He had about 99 CLEP credits and not a single one transferred to his school (University of Wisconsin-Madison). The first thing the CO told him in his interview was that none of the credits would transfer and didn't help his package at all (Luckily he had enough other merits to get selected). So if you're only doing CLEPs for STA-21, don't waste your time.

Now hang on ... CLEPs may not be a complete waste of time. They made me take the college algebra clep when I was at BOOST. I got to school and was looking to add a math minor and guess what ... they took my clep as part of the required math for my major, so that calc 3 could go for the minor instead of major requirement.

Concur that taking a bunch of CLEP won't get you half way done with school, but a little CLEP here and there might come in handy (depending on the school you go to and the major you pick).

I wouldnt focus so much on how many credit hours you have for you application. I got selected and only had 6 hours total, and those were from PACE, my SAT was low, but my Navy side of the application was very strong, so if you dont have great grades then focus on doing well in your job and the board will notice that.

Also, the hardest part of getting accepted into an Officer program is the application process itself. I have met many people that say they are going to apply but never do and if they did they would have an excellent chance getting accepted but they never do it. I had to finish my package while on deployment and this was on a submarine so the outside help was none(it did help that we had Academy MIDNs onboard). Get the package in and dont worry about getting the best SAT or ACT, yes it would help but if you just focus on your SAT or ACT or how many semester hours you have, you may miss something more important in your package.

Have you tried the SAT? Most schools accept that over the ACT test. You may want to focus your studying to the SAT.

I wasn't saying they were a complete waste of time, only in the context of making your STA package look better (especially in AWguy's case where he doesn't have a lot of time)

I picked up an ACT test prep book the other day, it seems to help a little bit. Im beginning to recall alot of stuff from high school and college again, Which is good. I also picked up a study guide for the ASTB which I will have to take aswell. Anybody have an suggestions for that exam aswell? Websites? books? I hear you can only take it three times, so you have to make it count.

Most people that study the gouge and understand what the question is asking and how to come up with the answer do quite well.

I have taken the SAT twice now. Once back in High school and again last year. I seem to do better on the ACT. I dont know how or why, but I feel more comfortable with the ACT. I will still atttempt the SAT, you never know what could happen.
