Asking for my own info (as I will soon need to get base stickers for a new car), as well as a friend. If you have a car that is registered in a state/area that doesn't conduct smog/emissions testing, do you still have to get it smogged to get it registered on base in CA? I was under the impression that you didn't (and indeed when I first checked in here @ Miramar they didn't make me do it for my previous car), but some of the folks at the pass and ID office seemed to think my friend needs to smog his car that is registered in SC.

Yes you will need to get it smogged to get a sticker. The rules apply the same, so I think California doesn't require smog certs for a car less than 3 years old and if it was built before 1976, diesels, and motorcycles.

I had a 10 year old pickup truck registered in Florida and I did not need a smog certificate to get stickers.
My squadron First LT did stickers rather than having to go to Pass/ID, so I don't know if that made a difference or not.

It all depends on the base. Regardless of where your car was registered, Camp Lejeune required you to get a NC State Inspection. MCAS New River (literally right across the river) did not.

Did not need one for my car in Lemoore, but then again this place already smells like cowshit.

NASNI as well as most bases in CA require a smog check to get the sticker. There is actually an agreement between the military and the state of CA basically saying that we will follow CA emissions standards. Sometimes you can get the smog check done at the Autoport and they are pretty lenient. The best way however is to find your First LT. Usually they have a stash of base stickers and they can hook you up. The smog crap was one of the things that pissed me off the most with my previous car when I was in CA.
