sinus issues

I've done a lot of searching on the subject mainly because I'm trying to find everything that can NPQ as SNA or SNFO once I get to OCS and I've seen sinuses mentioned as a big reason however unlike vision not much is mentioned about sinuses.

At what point can sinuses NPQ you for SNA / SNFO? I saw that if you can't get your ears to pop thats an issue, but not much else other than that.

Do they screen for this during the 2ed day physical at OCS?

Once found what are your options? Can it be waivered or fixed?

I had some pretty finicky sinuses for the whole year prior to flight school. I was treated for infections and bronchitis, both using antibiotics. A doc finally treated it as an allergy and gave me flonase/claritin which took care of the problem. I was referred to the ENT at NOMI who gave me an exam (including sinus X Ray). He confirmed that there was nothing wrong and put me on a year-round prescription of Flonase to use whenever I wanted. Doc said it was no big deal and plenty of guys in aviation use it. I guess it depends what your problem is, though. I had a buddy get waivered for having surgery back in the day and a couple of others who've had surgery when in flight school. All has worked out for them.

A pretty good summary from Nozeman, from what I've seen. Sinuses won't be a big deal as far as being NPQ'ed as long as you take care of them and/or get them fixed. The problems arise when you try and fly when they're not 100%, and even that varies based on your physiology. I personally can't fly w/ cold, but others can.

That all said, do you have any specific issues? Because that's going to be far more helpful for you to post than us just giving you anecdotal evidence.

I don't have any specific issues that I know of other than possibly seasonal allergies and something like Sudafed or Flonase seems to clear it up pretty good. I've never noticed any pressure or pain while in any commercial aircraft so I am probably just fine.

I'm more or less just trying to wrap my head around all the possible ways of getting NPQ'ed once you start OCS, it seems like it should be a novel (a horror novel, no doubt!)

Don't worry about seasonal allergies, you'll be fine.

I've had this annoying case of bronchitis or something which makes me go into these coughing fits and an occasional wheeze. My private asthma specialist (who I saw as a child) told me I don't asthma, so what is it? Is it NPQ?

i thought so too! at ocs, i admitted to have taken 2 ... no lie ... 2 claritin in the past year. the doc looked up my nose, said "one of your nostrils is smaller than the other." next thing i know, i'm getting surgery and a waiver for nasal polyps... even though i was completely asymptomatic. really regretted that one.

Dude.....but you have nasal polyps. Admitting you had allergies wasn't the problem, your real medical issue was. That sucks that you have to have surgery and deal with the waiver process, but they didn't kick you out. If it really isn't a big deal, then you'll come back from this.

i had absolutely no symptoms of the condition. i'm just sayin', sometimes if you admit to having seasonal allergies, it's not just a "oh no worries, you're fine" situation. they just might want to stick a big tube up your nose. i'm in no way ungrateful that they kept me or even bitchin' about the surgery. i had 24 hours free of DIs screaming at me ... and my roommate got me a sub from blimpies.

Yeah, the other end of the spectrum is not saying shit and fracturing a sinus cavity in the chamber(been done before). Not only NPQ but medically discharged, have a nice flight back to your home of residence.

People, seriously, don't fuck with that shit. Wings are one thing, a fucked up head for the rest of your life is a whole different ball of wax.
