Does anyone know what a selectively retained graduate is? Ive read of some pilots who, after jet training, stayed on as instructors.

You have it right. Commonly called SERGRADs. Usually finsih at the top of thier class. It used to be it wasn't something requested. If there was a shortage of instructors from the fleet, the command would identify candidates and go to them personally to offer the option. Payback for taking tose oders was usually a first pick on fleet aircraft after the SERGRAD tour. One shouldn't plan on a SERGRAD tour as it is fairly rare. Unlike the Air Farce, the Navy puts a great deal of importance on instructors with fleet experience. If everything went as planned in detailing instructors to the VT squadrons, there would probably be no SERGRADs.

I wondering about that. My Cousin got nabbed after the Air Farce saw that he had his CFI from OU(thats why I'm here). I was worried the Navy might do this to moi, so I didnt pursue my CFI(for Free, while the Navy would pay for it). Guess I didnt need to worry about that. Plus, why Learn everything about the Civy Aviation in a CFI course when your going to have to relearn everything the Navy way? Could bite me in the butt if something comes up that I'm not qualified to fly in the navy, but I thinking my odds are good right now!

The Air Force Instructor Tour was Three years for my Cousin (graduating F-16 school in a week), what is it like for the Navy? Two year normal rotation?

I'm not sure how long the assignment is now. I had sqaudronmates that had been SERGRADs but didn't know any in the training command. The guys I knew in the fleet seemed to think it was a pretty good deal. It delays your entry to the fleet, but the time ticks off your commitment since it is post winging. That means you will actually get more flying years in before your commitment is up and the rotation to shore duty after that first operational fleet tour.

He was at Shepard AFB in Witchta Falls TX. After finishing up in the T-38, he was selected as an Instructor in the T-37 for I think a 3 year tour.
