Selection Benefits

Is there any benefit to selecting one community over another in terms of advancement or general career path? I guess my question is if I select to one community or another, is that going to hurt my career?

If you want to make Admiral, or even Captain, don't go aviation. There has never been an Admiral who was an aviator. Ever. You have to go SWO. And seriously, if you didn't go to the boat school, don't even bother trying to make O-4, it will never happen. The only exception to the rule is to marry an Admirals Daughter. Then your guaranteed it no matter what you select.

Examples:
Bull Halsey - Married Admirals Daughter (and then became the oldest naval aviator)
James Stockdale - MAD
Fred Ashworth - MAD
Don Quinn - MAD
James Holloway III - MAD

All aviators - all married admirals daughters... coincidence? Go ahead, take a chance, and don't marry an admirals daughter...

In the grand scheme, there's really no difference. Each community has their plusses and minuses.

If you go CODs and stay CODs, meaning never fly anything but, the odds of you making flag rank, from a historical perspective, are zero. If that isn't a goal, then any community will do and make you at least an O-5.

Let's face it, 99% of us aren't making Flag rank, regardless of designator or community - shouldn't be a factor in the OP's decision-making process.

True, so my statement refers to that 1% who might actually have the aspiration and ability to make flag rank........don't go CODs. Worked for me being that I never had the aspiration or ability to really make anything over O-3. I'm still not sure how I made O-4

The incoming CENTCOM, ADM Fallon was an NFO, CAG, Carrier Strike Group Commander, and Commander 2nd Fleet. Not bad for a backseat driver.
