Is getting a job (tour?) as a Recruiter or ROTC considered an honor or is that considered someone who is effectively terminal. I would think that would be a good shore tour, but I was just curious if that is considered to help or hurt your career if you are in it for the long haul.

I have heard both about ROTC.
All the guys from 42 that went were priors, with 16-20 years in doing a farewell tour. My XO tells me it is competitive, but I have not seen an OIC, DH, CO or XO that has done it.

Both are best case career neutral these days, but were definitely a sign of "taking one's pack off" in the not so distant past.

Every recruiter in my office is either from here or is going to get out from here. In Unrestricted line communities, recruiting is not going to help you out. For enlisted guys, if you do well, it is a big career boost, but for officers, me especially it is a twilight tour job that gets you where you want to be.
Speaking for the SWO community, your tours (sea and shore) prior to your DH tours are for the most part not going to make or break your career. There are some that could potentially be career enhancing, but none that I know of that could "hurt" your career. Your career as a SWO is made at the DH level. With that said, all SWO's going to ROTC tours these days are required to commit to being a DH. Big Navy wanted to get guys in those positions who were career oriented.
So when you commit to being a DH, do they grab your soul right then, or do you turn it in when you actually start handing out bones to the JO's?
I know that in my community, 2nd tour recruiter would equal no chance at DH. Career neautral at best would be accurate for aviation as a whole, and as more and more communities go to competative dh screen boards (if that happens) it will become a more obvious career negative.
Typically, they get your soul on the day you get the first chunk of your SWO bonus (10K of 50K total). After that it is sold on the secondary market. Now, in my case, I never took the bonus, so I still have my soul.

Another question (well same, just new target):
What about selection boards? Is that a show stopper? I would imagine that would not be. Is that even a tour or do they just randomly select people to come off of their tours for a brief period to handle boards? I think that would be another interesting job (and one that you have to argue is important since its what keeps the Navy staffed/alive).

What part of the board are you talking about? If you mean actually sitting on the board (being a voting member or recorder) then no, it's not a tour, people go TAD to Millington for that. The people who actually set them up and do the administrative things I am not so sure. I guess they work for BUPERS, but I am not sure who they are.
That's the most devious version of "What are my chances/What %" yet.

Also, let me clarify, my previous comments referred to statutory promotion boards, I'm not sure how other selection boards work.
