(b) The Blazin' Satellite that went down in West Texas: I sorta wonder if the U.S. & Russian satellites actually had an an "accidental" collision in their "normal" orbits

I'm not an aviator...but I was wondering why did the pilot bank like that? Was it a simple reaction? It seems from the video like he almost hit the plane with his left wing.

The bank was a reaction, just enough to get out of the way but not enough to be stupid and fly into the dirt. AS for the article calling that 850 knots of closure......no freaking way.

Max airspeed in the UK low fly structure is 450, so I think they've over-stated the closure a bit.

Wouldn't these guys be talking to the equivalent of ATC or when they are in the corridor are they not under radar coverage?

You are an FAA certified pilot and are asking this question? Dude, go break out a sectional and look for a VR route. Half the time, it is a military jet evading a bugsmasher. Sure the bugsmasher has the right to fly at 500 feet in the middle of nowhere, but is it prudent to do it by a VR route, not really.

Dude, that's England, not the US. Our VR routes may or may not be the same as they are across the pond. That's why I'm asking. And I may be mistaken, but wasn't the prop job a military A/C as well?

See and avoid works over in the UK as it does here. Radar coverage in the hills of Scotland at 100'????? Methinks not.....VFR http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/ga_srg_07webSSL18.pdf The prop was also a military plane.

Thanks. I've got MOA's and Restricted a little north of where I live/fly, used to seeing F-16's working in those, but I stay out of their way. I know they're talking to VOLK Approach or Chicago (as am I) on their way in/out and are in radar coverage. Hopefully less chance for something like that to happen (in theory...).

I know they're talking to VOLK Approach or Chicago (as am I) on their way in/out and are in radar coverage. Hopefully less chance for something like that to happen (in theory...).

MOAs and Restricted Areas are different than the Military Training Routes aka VR/IR routes that are published on the MK1 sectional The military training routes denoted by VR are flown VFR and typically low and fast. There is no ATC deconfliction on these routes. The military training routes denoted by IR are flown IFR and fast....not as LOW as the low that you saw in the Tornado video. ATC deconfliction is provided on IR routes. Most civilian pilots do not know the danger of flying along/near military training routes. In a flight of 4 S-3's back in '02, we almost hit a Cherokee piloted by a guy in a Phillies hat on the route over Lake Okeechobee on the VR1087.

There aren't many Military Training Routes in my area so my experience is with the MOA's/Restricted airspace. I avoid them when they are hot if I'm VFR, and they won't let me into them when I'm filed IFR.
