When you guys are out on a cruise and you do joint training with other nations, do you get to stay at their airbases and hang out on land for a few days during the training?

I have heard multiple views on deployments. I've heard that each carrier has x # of squads that serve and they rotate on and off the boat. I've heard that deploys are 4-6 months and then about 18 months home. I feel like this is a bit light, care to comment?

Each carrier is assigned an air wing which consist of one F-14 squadron, 3 F-18 Squadrons, One EA-6b Squadron, 1 S-3 Squadron, One E-2 Squadron and one Helo Squadron, atleast thats what CVW 17 on the GW was composed of. Deployments are 6 months long with an 18 month break but about 6 months before you go on deployment you start workups to earn qualifications and prepare for the deployment. Cruise is the easy part, Its the workups that suck.

During the 6 month period of workups, how much of that are you on the boat or TDY(away from home)? I have heard time between deployments can be as little as 12 months. Is that true or not?

"a month off then you deploy" does that mean that you literally get a month off? Does that month count against your 30 day/yr?

Don't forget the 2 weeks of JTFX (Joint Task Force Excercises) where you work with Army and Air Force untis. That comes after COMPTUEX and just before deployment. As for the leave period before cruise, my squadron broke it up into two sections. Everyone was offered 2 weeks off and yes it does count against your 30 days a year.

The month off just prior to a deployment is called a POM period. Pre-Overseas Movement. The squadron uses that time to wrap up all the lose ends.

During the work ups, are you allowed to take leave? If so, when? Is there certain times during the workups that you are not allowed to take leave? If so, what parts of the work ups are they?

hmmmm "Skipper I'm having eye problems, I can't "see" coming to work today" not gonna work huh? I'll have to update my rolodex of excuses hehehehe
