Question about internet access in p-cola

OK, I realize this is an odd question, but what kind of internet access is offered in p-cola (after OCS)? Is there any broadband/cable internet access available, or is it pretty much dial-up? I am asking because after T-1, T-3 and then cable modem access at home I do not think I could deal with a dial-up connection...you know, the noise and the 15 minutes to download a picture of an -18!

Where do you plan on living? I don't know what goes on in the Q, but COX cable seems to have the market monopoly down here. I think that you have bigger and better things to worry about than whether or not you will have high-speed internet.
Is it really the pic of an 18 you plan on downloading? From the amount of time you spend on this site, I would assume you already have every one on your HD. Is there something else you plan on downloading that would require high-speed access??

Yes, there is high-speed internet. If you are desperate to check something, there is a little café type of thing in the exchange with a couple of computers. I have no idea what goes on with Navy OCS, so someone else will have to answer whether or not you will have time to go there.

Easy there, Worm. It's the simple pleasures that get you through life.

I lived up by UWF, and I was about 100 yards (no exageration) from the DSL switch. That was amazingly fast. They also have cable modem service there. This was, of course a while ago, so take it w/ a grain of salt. I remember the webmaster here was stoked about his ISDN in P'cola. We've come so far.

I was just getting feisty – I am just as addicted to the internet and this site as much as everyone else is.

I am right next to UWF, where I often find myself running the campus loop in hopes of spotting eye candy. We have the cable modem with a wireless router that goes to 4 computers, and it is still the fastest connection I have ever had. A lot better than Quantico, where we had the dial up because a lot of people were downloading “inappropriate” material, so by order, broadband was kanked.

See, Worm, you were sayin' I was the one downloading the bad stuff...I'm strictly PG-13 online...well, maybe R =) You'd better be careful running around checking out the eye-candy 'cause you might accidentally go home to your broadband connection and stumble over that inappropriate stuff! J/K...Actually, I do a lot of stuff online and I don't know how I'll deal without email, it's my primary means of communication (except face-to-face). Most of the time I'm watching the market, reading/posting here to get ready for 02AUG03 OCS, spending too much money on Ebay, or checking out real estate. Thanks for the replies, though.

You mean there's something more on the net than porn? Wow, I'll have to look into that.

Isn't that the truth, they got Cable right when I left for Corpus, but hey, I had DSL in Corpus, so wasnt too bad. Now, surfing at the blazing speed of 49.2k on deployment....

...while sitting in your own hotel room after going out and eating fresh steaks. And 49.2k...don't get me started. That's like the speed of light compared to the boat. Sigh...

I don't know what you are talking about, I mean the steaks were only Kobe, I only went to Outback twice (and TGIF once), and I had to walk uphill both ways, and it was such a chore filling out my travel claim.... but I digress..... remember, I asked you to go P3s, but noooo, you wanted to fly helos.... "choose your rate, choose your fate...."

I'm sorry, the WiFi broadband I'm on while on leave here in Florida has made your words garbled... {:)]

jaerose,
Hey I know what you mean, I live and die by the internet. It's like if I don't have it I feel like i'm not in touch with the world. There are so many things I use it for from communications to watching investments to reasearch. It's getting to the point that I know I need a new laptop cause the one I have is getting a little old (hopefully a apple powerbook G4)

Wow, sucks to be you, I guess.

Keep in mind, the key element is not UWF, but the actual switch. I lived in Governors Gate, which is literally a couple of hundred yards from the switch (It's on that "g" named street I can't remember...Grove?). Four miles, even if it is from the switch, is a long way for xDSL. In San Dog, I was about that far, at least, and they had to have an amplifier to make it to the Mission Valley apartments.

Anywho, it's whatever works for you. I'm pretty happy w/ my cable service now.
