question about I4001

goose18557

I4101 and counting down
When you fly I4001 where exactly do you go. How does the departure work. Any other good gouge like that would be appreciated.

your instructor will taxi you out while you're doing the instrument checklist...make sure to preflight your hood so you don't like look a kid on prom night trying to get that thing set up once you're out of the chocks

he'll take off, have you put on your mask at some point, then pass the controls to you and you'll do the ICA maneuver while he puts his mask on. he'll take the controls back at some point and set you up in the MOA. he's doing pretty much all the comms, too. from there it's just like your sims, all the nice maneuvers. they're really laid back flights, if you can get them on out and in's you'll probably fly up to florala (burritos) or andalusia (no burritos, but daily variety). same thing coming back...don't remember but i'm pretty sure you don't shoot approaches in primary BIs. relax, they're as easy as it'll get :D

yeah...i knew that much....do you just sit under the hood and wait for the IP to tell you what to do

yup.

He handles T/O and departure via course rules. You are only responsible for completing the instrument xlist before he gets to the runup.

While you are climbing out on Course rules, he will tell you to put on the hood. Make sure it isn't tangled up before you close the canopy. Otherwise, you'll have a terrible time donning it. You might have to put on your O2 mask, depending how high you go.

After that, you'll finish the climb via those silly clearing turns. Next, inst comparison check. Then just do whatever he tells you to do. GCA, S1, etc...

When it's time to come home, you'll take the hood off and watch as you have some sort of approach demonstrated to you.

This, by the way, is the time to get back into the books for contact procedures and course rules, if you haven't already.

Ask the IP if you can take a pause during the flight to look outside. Most of the flights are flown in the MOA over Area 2 and 2F. If the weather is clear, the MOA is a great place to get a view of all the landmarks. It will really help you stay oriented later in contacts.

Also, pay attention to what the IP is doing while you are sitting back enjoying the ride. This is a good oportunity to get some tips and get a comprehensive review of ground procedures, the break and landing.

Hopefully, your IP won't demonstrate any bad habits. A couple things an IP may do that you should never do (especially on your C4390): don't complete the checklist silently; don't rush the checklist; when taxiing back to the line after your flight, don't switch to base to check in, save that for when you are stopped and chocked per the checklist; don't do any of the shutdown checklist until you are stopped and chocked.

There may be some other bad habits. These are just some of the more common ones.

The best place to go for gouge like this is guys who are ahead of you in RIs...just fund someone at the squadron and ask them the flow of things...have them walk you through the flight.
Freudian slip? :D
