I've noticed that most of the carrier A/C have a series of green/yellow/red lights usually on their landing gear. Even the X-35C has it. I've also noticed that they change color durring approach.

What are these lights exactly? They there to help the LSO or something along that line?

I'm pretty sure they are for the LSO to determine if you are ON-Speed for approach. He can tell you if your Slow, Fast, or On-speed by which light he can see (corlates to the Angel of Attack the Approaching aircraft is at). Does this help?

Angle of Attack (AOA) lights. Aviators have the same lights in the cockpit but much smaller (AOA Indexers), and on the outside of the plane they are called AOA Approach lights. Yes, the LSO uses these to help the pilot safely land the aircraft. Basically you do what the light is telling you (Stop light correlation). Green-Speed up, Red-Slow down, and Yellow-On Speed. These lights are only on when the landing gear is down. Hope this helps!
