Quesiton regarding anemia waiver

AaronJB

Dumb Ensign, VT-6
Good afternoon,

I am currently in my final few weeks at OCS with class 05-15 and on Monday was called into medical and informed that I have an anemia with a below normal hemoglobin level of 13.8 g/dL. The doctor said that I will be put in for a waiver and said that it will likely be approved but did not give any idea of a time frame. I am scheduled to graduate on 16JAN and am worried I will not have the waiver and a NAMI letter in time.

My question is how long does it normally take to get waiver approval for anemia? Is anyone familiar with this situation or could anyone provide a better idea of what I am in for over these next few weeks? I am beginning to get the sense that I should start preparing myself for a move to Student Pool once my class graduates...

I did use the search tool before posting here and noticed that anemia has been brought up a couple of times on Air Warriors but it did not match my current situation.

Any insight would be much appreciated!

Aaron,

I too had the same issue as did a few other of my classmates, and we all graduated with 03-15 on time. For these types of common cases, NHCNE collects blood samples throughout your training and sends the results to NAMI. More than likely your waiver is already at NAMI and the process is playing out. If your case is severe enough the potential is there for you to stay in Student Pool while NAMI determines whether you need more testing. However, NHNCE sees their fair share of "anemic" candidates every three weeks and as long as your blood work shows improvement you may get the waiver or not even need one at all. I was told I had anemia, when really I was just under stress and malnourished that first week when they took my blood. I got my NAMI letter and orders the Monday before graduation.

Best of luck.
