Punks War/Wing/Fight

Punk's War, Punk's Wing and Punk's Fight are all pretty good books. It will give you an insight to the F-14 (Fighter) world along with some of the sillyness that goes on in the Aviation world/squadron/carrier.

These books were written by Ward Carroll, a retired F-14 guy....he's also the guy that drew "Brownshoes in Action Comix" for the Approach Magazine a few years back.

My only complaint is how Punk gets shot down over Afghanistan and becomes a real war hero (third book)....Anyone else get a chance to read these? I had a few flashbacks from my squadron JO days. Light and enjoyable reading. Comments please.

I read Punks War a few years ago... it was good. Haven't picked up a Wing or Fight yet... I will if they ever present themselves easily.

I read Punk's War and Punk's Fight. I haven't been able to find Punk's Wing yet, though. I think they're awesome books. My roommate on the ship (flight attrite) turned me onto them and I finished each of them in about two days.

I felt that the books tended to focus more on the People and Relationships rather than the flying. The books do a good job at showing people what a squadron dynamic is all about.

same opinion here, but really, how many more books could he squeeze out just solely re-hashing flight ops. "Wing" already featured the 'trials and tribulations' of the female aviator. Gag. Nothing against female aviators, but hasn't JAG done this enough for everyone?

The whole 'ground adventure in Afghanistan' stunk of "The Intruders". Oh look, Grafton is now with a USMC A-6 squadron and his BN just HAPPENS to be prior-E Force Recon...give me a break...the bit where he pulls some kind of home-made machete out of the back of his SV-2 was where I tossed the paperback into the can.

I will agree though, Carroll (sp?) does a great job of describing interpersonal relationships between the squadron members really well. Who hasn't had to deploy and live with a porn addict? Good times.

Look at the book dustcover sometime though, his cheesy leather jacket and sunglasses pic is hilarious. I seriously hope he was joking with those Michael Jackson "Beat-It" era wraparounds with the leather on the sides...

I liked "Punk's War" a lot. He did a good job of getting the banter and attitude down. I'll have to find the hardcover and see the pic of the author, though.

Keeping a recurring character fresh over several books has to be difficult. Take a look at Clancy's Jack Ryan. The only job left for him is Pope. When he became President, I had to stop reading those.
