I had heard that a lot of the JOs would have preferred it be called the mongoose.

Yeah, that's where they were headed with it, I think. I guess the EFA-18G Stoat just doesn't have that certain edge to it.

They sent around a big survey and request for input from the JOs for the new name a couple years ago, but it seems like they've just resigned themselves to "Growler" by default. Nobody in the community likes it, so we'll see what happens. My input (The EA-18G "Spot") was summarily rejected.

And so we have the irony of an aircraft whose initial variant was dubbed "Cobra" now being referred to as the "Mongoose." Rikki Tikki Tavi is likely spinning in his grave . . .

Why spend the money on all those variants when they can buy this flying wonder....
