Professor Plagiarism

What are the thoughts of your instructor handing you an assignment with an essay with no citations. She wrote it, right? I mean, she is the dean of academics and all. Well, I've been handed this, and much to my classmates' dismay, I informed them it was not her own work. I'm just wondering if anyone else has encountered this. I think most of my class is going to try and do something about it, while the half-smart-not-completely-retarded are just going to do the assignment and take the final. Has anyone else experienced this junk from their college career?

(I felt like airwarriors would care a little about integrity)

Here's the real work of the real author

Let me get this straight...you have a prof. who plagerized from an open sourced Brookings doccument????

Not real bright is all that comes to mind. If you are going to plagerize...at least be smart about it.

I can honestly say that I have never seen that happen in my college experiences.

Finally...be very certain of your facts before you go throwing stones. Be sure that the Prof intended to pass it off as her own work. I had numerous assignments where a large uncited quotation would form the basic question for an essay response. The professor never said that this was Dr. X's work but neither did he say it was their own... Keep in mind that there is quite a tortureous path most professors take on their way to teaching and that conduct such as that is often caught early...be careful is my only advice.

Wow...there was a prof at the boat school that got busted a few years back for not citing things correctly in a book about world war II. The only thing that saved the dudes job was him having tenure. Didnt quite make sense that they kept him...but it happens i guess. Though i have never heard of something so blatant. Did she actually say it was her work or was it just something for you to get ideas from/?

I'm in a glass house

I'm not saying a word. It's un-cited completely. Normally, I would say it's not plagiarism due to it normally being an obvious excerpt from a newspaper or the author is stated directly. But the reason this was questionable is due to the writer giving her own background. That is leading me, the student, to assume that she, the DOCTOR, was in a think-tank, conducted this research, etc etc. Personally, I don't care one way or the other, I've got an A. The fact that she has done this, being in the position she is in, is astonishing in my opinion. As for me though, I'm keeping my nose brown. It's December for Christ's sake.

Interesting. I once thought that I had a professor who plagiarized. Fortunately, I took the time to do a little investigating (including talking to the professor in question), and found out that he had a standing agreement with the publisher that allowed him to use their work uncited. Like Scoob said, be very certain of your facts. It is indeed astonishing that a professor would plagiarize a paper that a student could look up on the net. Probably something going on that you don't know about.

Frankly, it's not worth the trouble to make waves like that. Regardless of whether there was any intent to plagiarize, if you and/or other students call her out, it will undoubtedly become a huge sh!tstorm which will sweep you away with it. Take your A and carry on. If you feel that strongly about it, mention something on your end of course critique (if you do that at your school), or talk with an administrator about it once the class is finished.

I agree

I completely agree with that Brett. After class some of my classmates were questioning me about the documents integrity, so I just googled the first sentence on my laptop I had with me and there was the first sentence. This all happened today, and I wondered if she did indeed have a standing agreement to not cite her. I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this kind of incident where action was actually taken. Thanks for the input to the question everyone.

Nothing personal there UH...I can appreciate the elegance of the statement...just not the meaning.

Inappropriate Satire

If by "interesting" you mean Plaigerized, then yes, it is. It's a jab at one of my strongly red friends. I should remove it now that I think of it. Replace it with Family Guy or something.

Oh I knew what you meant, but it's probably the wrong choice of words. ;)
