Pets in the USMC?

Basically,
We have a dog right now and my better half understandably does not want to say goodbye(to the dog) when I graduate and am commisioned. All of the base websites I have visited say they provide 'veterinary care' but can a 2nd Lt with a family have a family dog that weighs less than 45lbs? If it makes a difference, I am an air option

THe base vet will do basic services, e.g. vaccinations, skin problems, etc for much less than a civilian vet. Anything weird, you'll need to go to a civilian vet. I had to find a dog sitter for 6 months for a deployment when I was single, but other than that, it's been good.

Have a dog and a cat ... no problemo.

Don't know about overseas duty stations, but it looked like we could take them both to Spain if that had eventuated (which it didn't). Hawaii is also not a problem, but you've got to get the quarantine stuff sorted out before you go unless you want your pet to sit in pet jail for months.

YES. We went to a local vet to get our possessed little bastards...er, our cute kittens their annual shots. The next time around, we went to the base vet for the vaccinations. To get both cats vaccinated on base cost less than the cost of the office visit for ONE of the cats off base! We saved something like 60% by going to the base vet for routine services.

The military has vets? I'm assuming that they are civilians, that just work for the base.... ?

No I read somewhere the Navy provides the vets. I am pretty sure the Navy commisions vets too, they send them to give Marines their shots in boot camp.

I much rather would have had a vet give me the shots in boot camp than those sadistic Corpsmen...

Anyway, they are Army vets - usually captains.
