Per Deim

Alright,
So I call upon the gods of knowledge to explain to me this. My college roomate is graduating from OCS on March 31 this friday. He has a 8 week delay before he classes up for API. He has selected some Per Deim (forgive my spelling if its wrong) option and they are giving him something like $34 extra a day for food and up to $65 extra a day for living expenses. Maybe I got it all wrong but HOLY CRAP THAT IS LIKE $3K extra a month. What is the deal here. Can anybody explain this to me.

My recruiter, a P-3 driver, told me that per diem was the sound made when a P-3s engines are winding down.

That is awesome. I mean, could that job get any cushier? Per diem, plus an aircraft thats like the Winnebago of the sky (coffee, cookies, bathroom, racks, etc.). Yeah, I definitely wouldn't be too upset if I end up flying P-3s.

per diem is used for moving or sometimes for a hurricane evac, but not as an addition to active duty pay while staying in one place. He will get per diem for the time it takes to move down to Pensacola, so depending on where he is coming from your looking at 10 - 12 days at the most...still a good deal but he won't be collecting it while waiting in the pool for API...does that make sense?

You can actually get per diem when not traveling, takes a bit of leg work but it is possible. Last year on deployment we got per diem when we were in port. 80+ days in 6 months = good times when we got back stateside. This wasnt a one time thing either, know plenty of people here now getting the hook-up, just depends on how your orders are worded.

Is he BDCP? Those guys make a **** load of $$$ in Per Diem for the time they are in Pensacola. They are the only group that I know of that does though... I'm really not sure how they get it either. Pretty much everyone i know from OCS, NROTC and the Academy got nothing more then Per Diem for transit days.

Not exactly.....BDCP guys coming out of OCS are on temporary orders to API, and thier permenant duty station is still back home or where they went to school (no follow on orders yet). We were asked if we essentially wanted permenant (follow on) orders to Pensacola or wanted to remain TDY and collect per diem....a real no brainer. So, it is possible to be on per diem during all of API including any A-Pool time that you have prior to classing up. :D

Everyone that went to Vance (NROTC, OCS, BDCP, ACADEMY), got back pay per diem for pcola. Most got something in the area of $10,000.
