PCS Damage claim & Carrier Salvage

I just got my adjustment check from my last PCS, but they said that they are claiming their right to salvage one of the damaged items.

I knew they could do this, but I've never heard of it happening, so I'd like to hear from anyone with experience or knowledge on this subject.
Is there a deadline for them to claim the item? Would the deadline start upon their receipt of my original claim, the day their notification letter was dated, or the day I cash the check? What happens after this date passes? Should you decide you'd like to keep the item, do you still have that option, and how would that be worked out?

I'll be calling Personal Property tomorrow (they're closed now), but I just wanted some heads up on what to expect here. The letter I just got is from about a month ago, so I'm expecting to hear from them soon if they are on a timeline.

I've been moving since '74; never heard of a mover claiming that right.....certainly not on the stuff they stole from me. :(

From my experience, it is unusual but I have seen it before. Resolution is usually that the value of the salvaged item was established and then you pay that amount to retain ownership, if you want it. "They" do not want the item but they are looking at some $$$'s to offset the claim.

That's what I was thinking. How much money could a moving company make off of a damaged and used piece of furniture? They must auction it or something, but I imagine the revenue is probably less than the cost it takes to pay guys to drive out, pick it up, and ship it somewhere. It seems it would make more sense for them to offer me slightly less than what I was asking and take their cut that way, but I guess this is just part of the game.
I was hoping that they would consider it a waste of their time. Like I said, the letter I got was dated 1 month ago, and I saw something on an AF page that said there was a 45 day limit for them to retrieve it. I assume that meant on day 46 they're SOL. I'm also guessing that the same rules apply to the Navy, but I can't find anything for sure.

Latest update:
I called the PPO yesterday. First guy on the phone was trying to convince me that the company could pretty much do whatever they wanted, as if the government gave them carte blanche. It took about 5 minutes of arguing with this guy that there is no way the government would award any contract without miles of paperwork before he transferred me to a useful human.

Second guy didn't know the answer, but he said he'd look into it. I got a call about an hour later saying he called the company (does no one have the official documents?) and they are no longer going to claim my stuff. So now I guess it's resolved, but I still can't tell you what the regs say.
